A fine & rare Meiji period 'Kabutomushi' bronze vase, exhibiting a fine old surface with an exceptionally fine patina overall, featuring an applied, naturalistically cast & detailed figure of a Rhinoceros beetle.
'Kabutomushi' is the Japanese term for the Rhinoceros Beetle, 'kabuto' meaning helmet (in reference to a Samurai helmet) and 'mushi' meaning insect.
In Japanese culture the Rhinoceros beetle is held in high regard for its symbolic reference to strength, power & perseverance.
Signed on the underside in Kanji, which are Chinese characters adapted to writings in Japanese.
Of significant weight for a vase of this scale, weighing 2 lbs / 7 ounces.
