About the Item

This wooden statue is a relic from Japan's Edo period, and within it lies a deep history that transcends time. Originally, it was part of a more intricate statue, likely adorned with outstretched hands, a pedestal, and a radiant halo, but after centuries, only the torso and face of the Buddhist statue remain. This sculpture has survived natural disasters, fires, and wars, and although it is missing parts, it still retains its radiance. This statue of Kannon Bosatsu stands out for the simplicity and beauty of its wood carving. The finely carved face displays a tranquil, meditative expression, as if inviting a moment of introspection. The flowing drapery of the robes, carefully carved, captures the subtle play of light and shadow on the material, showcasing the artist's skill and further enhancing the serene aura of the piece. While much of the original gold leaf has worn away over time, traces of gold decoration remain on the pedestal, hinting at the grandeur it once possessed. Currently, the statue has darkened with soot and smoke residue, which tells the story of its long life. On the back of the statue, there is an inscription that identifies it as "Sei Kannon" (Sacred Kannon), confirming that this is indeed a statue of Kannon Bosatsu. Despite its small size, the statue exudes an overwhelming presence. It would blend beautifully as a welcoming figure in an entryway, greeting visitors with a calm gaze, or as a centerpiece in a living room or study, adding a meditative tranquility. This Kannon statue, with its exquisite balance of antique art and artistry, embodies the very essence of wabi-sabi. With its deep connection to Japanese culture and spiritual history, this Kannon statue is a valuable addition to any collection. Its presence will undoubtedly enrich your space, inviting peace and quiet introspection. As a historical piece, allow it to continue its journey in your home. Weight: 0.3 kg *The pedestal on which the Buddha statue is placed is also sold on this site. [We mainly sell old Japanese items. We've seen tens of thousands of items so far. Rare Japanese antique wooden god statue /12th century/small wabi-sabi figurines
Located in Sammu-shi, Chiba
I was able to obtain a very rare item. This is a sculpture of the god ``Shinzo''. "Shin" = God "zo" = statue Since ancient times in Japan, it has been believed that gods reside in all things in the universe, and there have been many shrines. In the 6th century, Buddhism was introduced and gradually spread throughout Japan. Around the 8th century, the idea that gods follow the teachings of Buddha spread. Until the Edo period, God and Buddha became one and the idea of ``Shinto and Buddhism syncretism'' was established. This statue was created during such a history. Originally, the image of God was invisible and could not be understood as something tangible. However, with the introduction of Buddhism to Japan, idol worship was also introduced, and the idea that the gods follow the teachings of Buddha was also propagated at the same time in order to spread the teachings of Buddhism. Around that time, around the 9th century, the first statues of gods...

A carved wood buddha with lacquered surface in the style of Erku (1632–1695), a monk from Edo period who was famous for hand-carving Buddha statues in a primitive style. From a single wood block of what appears to be cedar, the standing buddha was carved in an unpolished manner with exposed knife strokes that effectively depicted a subtly smiling face and the folding of the cascading robes. The rustic style is full of Mingei charm being a great example of Japanese Buddhism...
