About the Item

A large, tall Thai standing carved teak wood Buddha, lacquered and gilt, with hand raised in abhaya mudra, far Northern Thailand or possibly Laos, early 20th century. Near life-sized and carved from solid teak, the Buddha is portrayed standing upright upon a stepped, stylized lotus pedestal dressed in a loose fitting robe that hangs down to his calves, a mantle draped over his shoulders, and a sash tied around his waist. The Buddha stares intently outwards through wide, open eyes, a large smile playing across his generous mouth and full lips. Long, pendulous earlobes flare out to frame his face. His hair arranged in distinctive spiked curls. A separately carved flame finial rises from his pronounced ushnisha. The Buddha's right hand raised in abhaya mudra, the gesture of reassurance and dispelling fear, a spiral pattern carved on his palm. His other hand rests graciously by his side, long, elegant fingers pointing downwards, gently grasping the fabric of his mantle. In the context of Thai Theravada traditions, this pose is also known as "Preventing the Relatives from Fighting", representing an allegorical story of the Buddha coming back to Earth after reaching Nirvana, only to find his relatives fighting over land and water. The Buddha, in his infinite wisdom and compassion, was able to show them a middle path to compromise and peace. This image is also known as the Monday Buddha in Thailand, and is especially sacred to those born on a Monday. Carved from heavy teak wood, lacquered, then gilt, the sculpture is in four parts - the lotus pedestal, the Buddha, the raised hand, and the flame finial. The gold of the gilding worn and mellow, with red and black lacquer highlights showing through.
