The boxwood netsuke finely carved as a kneeling Noh dancer dressed in striking geometric patterned robes. The actor holds an opened war fan behind their back in one hand, a Shinto wand slung over the shoulder in the other. The war fan, tessen, decorated in red lacquer with a golden rising sun at the center. Tessen were sturdy fans used by samurai as protective devices, and sometimes as weapons. The wand, called an onusa, is a traditional Shinto ritual implement comprised of folded paper streamers, shide, attached to a wooden wand, often used in purification rituals. A fine and well carved Chinese pair of carved malachite vases with loose ring handles and fitted bases, Republic Period, mid 20th century, China. The vases carved from solid malachite of exceptional color and featuring spectacular striations. The vases of baluster form, and ingeniously carved with loose ring handles at the shoulders and the neck. The loose rings supported by taotie (ogre or gargoyle) form mask handles. In addition to the loose ring mask handles to the front and back, the necks of the vases also sport long, angular handles to the sides. Seemingly carved in two sections - the neck and the body. The neck then screws into the body. The neck on one vase stuck. The vases presented on fitted carved and pierced stands with silver wire inlay.
