About the Item
A darling and charming small Thai lacquered and gilt bronze figure of the Buddha Sheltered by a Naga, Buddha Muchalinda, Rattanakosin Period, circa 1900, Thailand.
The small statute depicts the Buddha seated upon a lotus pedestal in meditation upon a stepped dais. The dais actually comprised of the coils of a large serpent, the Naga Muchalinda. Muchalinda rises above the meditating Shakyamuni, sheltering him with the hoods of his seven heads.
Cast in bronze, the figure is lacquered in red and black lacquer, covered in a thick gilding, and embellished with mirrored "gems".
This is a popular image in Southeast Asia, where it is known as Naga Prok. This image recalls a chapter in the Buddha's life, shortly after he achieved enlightenment. While the Buddha was engaged in a deep meditation, a large a powerful storm began to rage. The King of the Nagas, Muchalinda, saw the Buddha lost in meditation, unprotected, and unaware of the dangerous storm around him. Muchalinda decided to raise the Buddha above the rising waters upon his thick coils, and shelter him from the wind and rain using his heads.
