Chinese Full Moon Rice Millstone, c. 1900
Located in Chicago, IL
This large stone disc was originally used in a provincial Chinese home as a heavy millstone for grinding rice and other grains into flour and meal. Hand-carved from solid granite to a round, full moon shape, the millstone has a highly textured surface chiseled with an orderly pattern of straight furrows. The opposite side is less worked, with a rougher, organic texture. We love placing millstones like this outdoors to add a stone element to a garden, whether used as an abstract sculpture, as a stepping stone or as the face of a bubbling water...

Vanderbilt Hotel Bacchus Architectural Remnant, 1912
Located in Bloomfield Hills, MI
From the 1912 Vanderbilt Hotel in New York City, Manhattan, located on Park Ave. In the 20th century, the hotel business declined, and the Vanderbilt Hotel suffered foreclosure in 1935 during the Great Depression. In 1966, an investment group purchased the 54-year old structure with intentions of renovating it into a dual function office and apartment building. The top 18 floors would become studio and one-bedroom apartments while the lower floors would be offices and commercial space. “New aluminum-and-glass curtain walls are being erected to sheath the office floors, while the masonry façade of the hotel will be retained on the upper stories,” said one article. But that was just the beginning of the brutality. Penthouse apartments were being constructed on the roof, but the view was obstructed by the terracotta parapet and its massive sculptures. In June 1966 eighteen of the heads were removed, resulting in a gash in the roofline. “The heavy pieces were removed over a period of several days by a 10-man crew of the Drachman Demolition Company,” said The New York Times, “which used jack...

This basin is further elevated by complete original fittings and beautiful cast iron stand made by BICLAM. The Simon Kirby Museum of Bathroom Sanitary Ware Sanitary ware extraordinaire and enthusiast Simon Kirby was the proud owner of a rare and impressive collection of Thomas Crapper toilets, basins and baths. As the former director of Thomas Crapper & Co, Kirby spent more than 40 years carefully sourcing these specialist pieces, making it his vocation to ensure such rare and valuable sanitary ware was saved and salvaged, creating the former Thomas Crapper Museum. Kirby made it his vocation to ensure such rare and valuable pieces were saved and salvaged. Over the years, the former museum has not been open to the public, with only a few history enthusiasts and keen customers having been invited to view a handful of pieces. Names such as Doulton and Co and Twyfords form part of this outstanding collection that demonstrates the development of sanitaryware over the centuries. Although Kirby sold the iconic Thomas Crapper company 8 years ago, he remains an expert in the history of the ‘smallest room’ and now serves as a consultant to the Royal Household.
