Michael Andersen Bornholm Danish Ceramic Bottle Vase
About the Item
A small factory was established in 1740 by Rasmus Olsen was eventually acquired in 1890 by Jens Michael Andersen (Danish, 1859 – 1931). The factory was in the town of Rønne on the island of Bornholm. The factory produced strong and interesting ceramics well into the 1950’s and early 1960’s and attracted many renowned ceramicists who contributed to the factory’s success including Jens Jakob Bregno, Marianne Starck and Sigvard Bernadotte.
This unusual and very attractive Danish mid-century ceramic handled bottle shaped vase made at the Michael Anderson & Son Bornholm factory and probably dating from around 1960. The vase is shaped as an oil bottle standing on a wide round foot with a slightly recessed base decorated in natural glazes. The lower body is of skirted shape supporting a thin oval shaped body with a narrow tall funnel shaped top with a ring-shaped edge around the opening. A small loop handle is applied to the side of the neck. The vase is decorated with a stylized seedpod design hand painted in blue on a light grey craquelure ground with brown glazes applied to the handle and top rim. The vase has a raised Michael Andersen mark to the base and is numbered 5669.
