Ruscha 342 Fat Lava Vase Organic Western Germany Ceramics Signed 1960s-70s

About the Item

Classic Ruscha 342 vase was heavily featured in first retrospective exhibition of West German ceramics of the 1960s-1970s in the Graham Cooley Collection that brought Fat Lava ceramics to the attention of collectors and interior designers. The 342-model vase was made in four different sizes, from the smallest 342-1 to the largest 342-4, and in huge variety of glazes. This vase is 342-3, medium size for this model; it is decorated in a variant of Tundra decor glaze, a foamy white glaze with a band of darker brown, black, or green, likely reflecting cold frozen tundra environments. Off-white, matte lava glaze is spiraling down over dark brown, glossy background, creating rich textural interest in restrained, organic, earthy color palette. The inner surfaces of the vase are done in semi-gloss dark green glaze. The minimal form of this vase is attributed to Kurt Tschorner, who created multiple asymmetrical, organic-inspired vessel shapes while working as a freelancer designer for Ruscha from 1954; the pieces were often decorated with new, experimental glazes by Otto Gerharz and Cilli Worsdorfer (source: 50er Jahre Keramik by Horst Makus, pp. 126, 154-155). The vase is signed with 342-3 on the bottom under the glaze (it is hard to see the number due to textured glaze, but it can be felt by touch) and paper sticker "Made in Western Germany". It is in good vintage condition.
