Doulton Lambeth Silver Plate Mounted Sugar Pot By Clara Barker 1878

About the Item

A stylish early Doulton Lambeth stoneware sugar pot with silver plated mounts by renowned artist Clara S Barker and made in 1878. There is a further interesting artist mark to the base of this piece which is either that of Jane S Hurst, however she is recorded as starting at Doulton Lambeth in 1879 with this piece predating that. A very similar mark was also used by John Huskisson who joined Doulton Lambeth in 1878, however he was not there for long and therefore pieces bearing his mark are rare. The stoneware sugar pot stands raised on a narrow round foot and is wide round plump waisted shape and is decorated with stylised leaves, rosettes and beading. The sugar pot is hand painted in tones of blue, brown and white against a salt glazed patterned ground and is mounted with a silver plated rim and cover with a swing handle. The sugar pot has impressed makers marks to the base along with artist marks for Clara S Barker with either a mark for John Huskisson or Jane S Hurst, as discussed above, and is also dated 1878. Provenance: Acquired from the UK Art Market. The sugar pot is offered in good condition.
