About the Item

A stunning Doulton Lambeth stoneware silver mounted leaf design jug and early work by renowned designer and decorator Frances E Lee and dated 1877. The jug is finely made standing raised on a narrow round foot with a round beaker shaped body with raised ridges top and bottom and with a coiled shaped handle and with a silver mounted rim. The body of the jug is very finely decorated with an arrangement of leaves with beaded elements applied around a central band against a simple incised patterned ground and set between bands on stylized leaves incised around the upper and lower body of the jug. The jug is hand painted in tones of brown, blue and white against a pale light blue ground. The base has a white glazed finish while the inner jug has a natural finish. The jug has impressed makers marks to the base along with artist marks for Frances E Lee and assistant marks for A Sayers, Harriette Lee along with a further mark possibly for Emily Mayne. The jug is also dated 1877 and is numbered 428. The rim bears London silver hallmarks for 1877. Provenance: Acquired from the UK Art Market. The jug is offered in good condition with a few customary minor firing faults.
