Frank A Butler Early Doulton Lambeth Leaf Design Salt Glazed Jug

About the Item

A very stylish and early Doulton Lambeth Art Pottery jug decorated with stylized scrolling leaf designs by highly renowned artist Frank A Butler and dated 1873. The stoneware jug is of rounded bulbous shape standing on a narrow round foot and tall slender neck with a simple round top with pinched pouring spout. A loop handle is applied to the side. The jug typifies what has become considered as some of Butler’s best work with a deep carved ground with stylized floral and leaf designs around the lower body and with scrolling leaf patterns set against a deep carved ground around the main body and with further leaf patterns to the neck with a carved ring where the neck joins the body. Similar carved designs are also applied to the handle. The jug is hand painted in tones of blue and green utilizing the white tones of the salt glazed ground. The jug has impressed early makers marks to the base incorporating the date 1873 and also has impressed initials DBC which we have been unable to identify (perhaps made to order?). The base bears incised artist marks FAB for Frank A Butler and unusually has incised LG marks for Lily Goldsack, and assistant who worked in the Faience department at Doulton Lambeth. There is also a collectors paper label. Provenance: From the Ann Turner Collection of Doulton Pottery acquired from the UK Art Market. In good condition with light wear associated with age and use.
