About the Item

Extremely decorative representation of a life-size Moluccan cockatoo perched attentively on raised foliage. Painted with bold color accents, on a five-pointed star base with grooves on the sides. Modeller: PAUL WALTHER (1876 - 1933) full name: Louis Clemens Paul Walther, was a German sculptor and animal sculptor of the Meissen Porcelain Manufactory. Paul Walther studied one semester at the Art Academy in Dresden and was otherwise self-taught. From 1891 he worked at the Meissen Porcelain Manufactory. Numerous models of animal figures come from him, also in connection with vessels. He was one of the most productive modellers at the Meissen porcelain manufactory: he made 196 models between 1904 and 1933. Paul Walther was a member of the Dresden artists' group in 1913. Cockatoo's with their glorious crown of plumage think they own the world and this one certainly does. It sits with royal dignity upon its lusciously painted Veridian and Gold glazed column. An exquisite Hutschenreuther-Selb porcelain that is over 100 years old. The stamps on the bottom show the names of Lorenz Hutschentreuther and the Hutschenreuther A.G., Selb company. It is marked on the bottom Department of Art per the description - Abteilung fur Kunst. A #3 is located on the inside lip of the underside base. Hutschenreuther is the name of a German family that established the production of porcelain in northern Bavaria, starting in 1814. The Hutschenreuther porcelain business was founded in 1814 by Carol’s Magnus Hutschenreuther (1794-1845) in Hohenberg an Der Eger, Bavaria, Germany. He had previously worked at the Wallendorf porcelain manufactory in Lichte (Wallendorf.) After his death in 1845, the factory was headed by his widow, Johanna Hutschenreuther, and her two sons. A large part of the factory was destroyed by a firedestroyed by a fire in 1848, but it was rebuilt. From 1860, they produced hand-painted and gilded porcelain products.
