About the Item

Large, very elaborately decorated crater vase from the Meissen manufactory, with abundant snowball blossoms on the outer wall, rising above the white flowers in fully sculpted tendrils with foliage, with a pair of birds billing on top, a woodpecker, a nest at the bottom with a mother bird feeding her brood, and insects in between: butterfly, dragonfly, cockchafer and bee. This lavishly and lovingly designed vase reveals the inexhaustible inventiveness of the designers and the excellent craftsmanship of the modellers at the Meissen manufactory, which are irreplaceable in this form. 'Inspired by Chinese porcelain, Kändler first covered the surface of a coffee and tea service completely with small flowers reminiscent of snowball flowers in May 1739. In 1741/1742, new flower shapes were added, which may have been used for the cover of lidded vases with the portraits of Louis XV and Augustus III, which are in the porcelain collection. Large vases are mentioned in Frederick the Great's withdrawal list of December 1745 as ‘1 Camin centrepiece, largest variety of snowball blossoms’. Particularly in candlelight, the vases appear to be physically dissolved and, thanks to the sculpted overlays with additional flowers and the appliquéd, colourfully painted birds, they take on an unprecedented naturalistic effect. Snowball vases were extremely expensive and are therefore only known to have been in important royal houses such as the court of the tsars, but also in ruling houses in Germany. Frederick the Great had a particular weakness for them and in 1762 ordered numerous pieces for the New Palace in Potsdam, especially for the blue chamber of his apartment there. The vases were placed on consoles between the wall panels, while others were placed on the fireplaces.' Lit.: Ernst Zimmermann, Meissen Porcelain, 1926, p. He is the most famous modeller Meissen manufactory ever had and created famous series such as Shepherd Figurines, Comedian's Children, Gardener Children (with Acier), Paris Town Criers (with Reinicke and Meyer), Gallant Figurines, etc. Model 2767 was created in the year 1760. Chelsea Porcelain Frill Vase with Birds, Rococo ca 1760
By Chelsea Porcelain
Located in London, GB
This is a charming frill vase made by the Chelsea Porcelain factory in about 1760. The vase is in the Rococo style and it speaks for itself why this style of vase is called a "frill" vase. This vase has undergone restorations (although it still holds water perfectly) and is therefore offered As Found (A/F) at a reduced price. Chelsea was one of the very early adopters of porcelain in the British china industry. Founded in 1744 the Chelsea pottery was for about 40 years the leading maker of fine chinaware, excelling in their sense of style, perfection and constant innovation and inspiring many following generations of china makers. The company was started by French silversmith Nicholas Sprimont and you can see the influence of the French style of silverware...
