About the Item

An impressive, extravagant work of art in ideas, richness of detail and craftsmanship, based on a legend according to which the court tailor longed to be allowed to sit at the table of August III at the Dresden Palace... Here in a smaller version, accompanied by his wife. The tailor is sitting astride the magnificent billy goat, and with his right hand, he is raising his large scissors in the air like a weapon, holding the reins of the goat, who is carrying the iron in his mouth, on the tailor's back, a pannier with two kids. The group is supported by a tree stump below the goat and is based on a rounded rectangular base with meadow decoration and gold ornamentation. The tailor's wife sitting sideways on a goat, breastfeeding the tightly wrapped child lying on her lap. The animal also has a young with it, which kneels and sucks on the udder of the mother animal. The group is supported by a tree stump below the goat and is based on a rounded rectangular base with meadow decoration and gold rim. 'One day the court tailor asked to be given the opportunity to appear at the court table instead of receiving a fee for the work he had done. He was not brusquely refused, but asked to return to the royal bosom after a few weeks. The dawn of an unheard-of honour beckoned to the tailor. Then the order for the group was placed with the Meissen manufactory. When the court tailor appeared on the day on which he had been summoned to attend the court table and had been solemnly led from one room to the other to heighten his excitement to the point where it was barely bearable, his astonishment and disappointment must at first have been quite profound when he had to behold his likeness in porcelain on a festively laid table in the hall.' (Otto Walcha, Anekdotisches Porzellan 1981, pp 10-12 with illustration).
