Vintage Meissen Blue Onion Set of Cup and Saucer Blue White Porcelain

About the Item

Vintage set of demitasse cup and saucer was made in Germany of semi-transparent bone china. It is decorated with famous Blue Onion pattern; the cup has geometric shape and the angular Berlin shaped handle. The set is marked with crossed swords mark with straight crosspieces and decorator marks, both in blue, and impressed 6 or 9 blank shape number. The mark dates this set from 1934 to 1973 with the exclusion of 1945-1947, when the crossed swords mark had a crescent below. Please note the crossed swords with pommels incorporated into a pattern (at the base of the bamboo cane under the double leaf element), that are a traditional element of the pattern since 1882 and serve as an additional identification mark. Blue Onion pattern was created in 1730s and was reworked through multiple iterations throughout the years. Interest in the Onion Pattern started to increase around 1830; painters experimented with underglaze blue, high-fire blue, royal blue and overglaze colors. The classic Onion Pattern and elements thereof in subsequent patterns are all still manufactured by the Meissen State Porcelain Manufactory.
