About the Item
Stunning sculptural table lamp features majolica ceramic body, created by Alvino Bagni for Raymor in 1960s as a part of his Sea Garden series, and solid carved walnut top. Sea Garden series includes vases, ashtrays, lamps, and other decor items, done in complex glaze with various shades of blue, green, grey, yellow, and brown, and decorated with surface impressions, such as the circles, lines, and squares.
The ceramic base, made of converted vase or vessel, is decorated with three bands of incised circles on the upper part of the body with a geometric band of vertical lines underneath; it is marked with impressed Italy on the bottom. The rare mocha brown and grey-green colorway of the glaze is complemented by the natural tones of the walnut top and brass base and fixtures. The earthy, organic palette of the lamp makes it a perfect addition to various interiors, from Mid Century Modern to Organic Modern, Contemporary, Country, or Traditional.
The lamp stands 19" high to the top of the socket, and 25.5" - to the top of the finial. It is fully operational with a new socket and wiring. We are offering a Sea Garden vase in turquoise glaze colorway, in blue, green, and yellow palette, in a separate listing.

Raymor
Few had their finger on the pulse of American furniture like importer and distributor Raymor. Founder Irving Richards first had his eyes opened to the world of furniture while attending the 1928 Salon d’Automne art and design fair in Paris. He joined Lightolier two years later and developed its business relationships, including with designer Russel Wright.
Wright and Richards met in 1935 and Russel Wright, Inc. was formed in 1936. Its American Modern ceramic tableware, produced under the name Wright Accessories in 1938, was a notably lucrative collaboration. Following the early success of American Modern, Richards obtained the majority share of Wright Accessories and changed its name to Raymor Mfg Division Inc. in 1941.
By 1952, the exclusivity over American Modern had ended (the line was initially produced by Wright Associates and later manufactured by Steubenville for two decades). To keep up with American markets, Raymor worked with prominent designers such as George Nelson, Arthur Umanoff, Ray and Charles Eames, and Hans J. Wegner.
The company’s imports expanded to Denmark, which contributed to the rise of Scandinavian modern designs in the American market. Throughout the 1950s, Richards established relationships with factories in Scandinavia, Italy and Germany, as well as with the influential tastemaker and importer Charles Stendig.
The furniture company Simmons bought Raymor in 1963 and changed its name to Raymor Richards, Morgenthau Inc. in 1969. During that time, Raymor’s Omnibus range of Scandinavian-style wall units became widely popular, along with Italian glass and pottery like Bitossi ceramics designed by Aldo Londi and Bagni ceramics by Alvino Bagni.
Shifting styles coupled with rising competition, and the departure of Richards from the company, ended Raymor. By the late 1970s, Raymor faced a wave of international factories able to produce similar products of lesser quality for a lower cost. Buyers were eager to frequently change their interior styles, limiting the need for high-end, durable furniture, which Raymor had been importing.

Stepping away from merely utilitarian view of everyday objects, his recent collections are filled with meaningful textual context while incorporating traditional and modern woodworking techniques. Roman is using practical function as a common denominator to create emotionally charged art objects, blurring the boundary between art and function. While appreciating possibilities of ordinary materials, Roman is developing new mixed media multilayered composite varnishes and utilizes decorative gilding and mica veneer to actively engage ambient light, giving an additional aspect to relation of his objects to their environment. The decision to work in custom format was based on environmental concerns and opposition to culture of mass production and pure consumerism. The choice of materials was heavily influenced by sustainability and environmental concerns. All objects are made locally in the Brooklyn Navy Yard workshop. Elimination of storage and transportation needs for mass-produced furniture in lieu of creating a custom made objects on demand allows us to reduce waste of materials and energy.

Rare, unusual vintage majolica lamp features abstract graphic decor with large flower motifs, done in relief; the body is mounted on turned solid wood base. The upper part of urn-shaped ceramic body is accentuated with 6 symmetrically placed soft indentations, a common feature for Mid Century Modern glass and ceramic shapes; the strategic placement of the relief elements guides the eye along the complex shape of the lamp. The reliefs are hand-sculpted with light variations in shapes and forms of the leaves and petals and a few visible joint lines, further emphasizing organic, hand-made quality of the lamp. Muted, evocative color palette complements the textured decor and the sculptural body of the lamp without overpowering it. Bordeaux red and teal green glazes are used for the flowers and leaves; the mottled mocha and cappuccino brown background features linear plaid design in the same red color that is used on the relief elements, unifying the colors of the composition.
The lamp is signed on the bottom with FF (for the manufacturer, Fratelli Fanciullacci) and ITALY. It is in good, fully operational vintage condition, with the new socket, brass fittings, and wiring. It stands 17" tall to the top of the socket, and 24.5" - to the top of the finial.
