About the Item
18th-Century Dutch Garden Design by Gijsbert van Laar – Magazijn van tuin-sieraaden, 1802
This exquisite hand-colored engraving is from the renowned work 'Magazijn van tuin-sieraaden' by Gijsbert van Laar, published in Amsterdam by Johannes Allart in 1802. This monumental publication is considered the most comprehensive and influential Dutch work on garden architecture of the early 19th century. It presents an encyclopedic collection of garden designs and decorations, reflecting the latest European influences while being adapted to the local conditions of the Dutch Republic.
Gijsbert van Laar (1767–1820) was a prominent Dutch garden architect and nurseryman. His work was inspired by some of the most prestigious international publications of the period, including J.G. Grohmann’s 'Ideenmagazin für Liebhaber von Gärten' (Leipzig 1796–1806) and John Plaw’s 'Ferme ornée; or rural improvements' (London 1795). Van Laar skillfully incorporated ideas from these works while tailoring them to the Dutch landscape and gardening traditions.
This plate, numbered "Pl. XLVII," is a prime example of van Laar’s elegant landscape design concepts. It features a richly detailed garden layout, blending natural elements with ornamental structures. The plan showcases a picturesque combination of winding paths, artificial hills, small pavilions, a central lake, a bridge, and varied vegetation. The use of curved lines and irregular forms follows the principles of the English landscape garden style, emphasizing a natural and harmonious aesthetic.
Key features of the garden plan include:
1. A large lake (D) with flowing contours, crossed by a graceful bridge (C).
2. Several garden buildings and pavilions (I, H, E, B), strategically placed on small hills to enhance the scenic views.
3. Meandering pathways leading through wooded areas, open lawns, and cultivated fields, creating a sense of discovery and tranquility.
4. A diverse array of vegetation, ranging from dense clusters of trees to open meadows and flower beds.
5. A cultivated agricultural field at the top (L), symbolizing the integration of practical and ornamental landscaping.
Van Laar’s work became highly influential and set the standard for garden architecture in the Netherlands during the early 19th century. The complete edition of *Magazijn van tuin-sieraaden* eventually comprised 24 installments with 190 engraved plates, published between 1802 and 1809. The present plate belongs to the first edition, which included the initial 12 installments and 96 plates, of which 56 were hand-colored.
