BRAZILIAN FURNITURE

More often than not, vintage mid-century Brazilian furniture designs, with their gleaming wood, soft leathers and inviting shapes, share a sensuous, unique quality that distinguishes them from the more rectilinear output of American and Scandinavian makers of the same era.

Commencing in the 1940s and '50s, a group of architects and designers transformed the local cultural landscape in Brazil, merging the modernist vernacular popular in Europe and the United States with the South American country's traditional techniques and indigenous materials.

Key mid-century influencers on Brazilian furniture design include natives Oscar NiemeyerSergio Rodrigues and José Zanine Caldas as well as such European immigrants as Joaquim TenreiroJean Gillon and Jorge Zalszupin. These creators frequently collaborated; for instance, Niemeyer, an internationally acclaimed architect, commissioned many of them to furnish his residential and institutional buildings.

The popularity of Brazilian modern furniture has made household names of these designers and other greats. Their particular brand of modernism is characterized by an émigré point of view (some were Lithuanian, German, Polish, Ukrainian, Portuguese, and Italian), a preference for highly figured indigenous Brazilian woods, a reverence for nature as an inspiration and an atelier or small-production mentality.

Hallmarks of Brazilian mid-century design include smooth, sculptural forms and the use of native woods like rosewoodjacaranda and pequi. The work of designers today exhibits many of the same qualities, though with a marked interest in exploring new materials (witness the Campana Brothers' stuffed-animal chairs) and an emphasis on looking inward rather than to other countries for inspiration.

Hand-Painted Icon of the Madonna, Mid-19th Century
Located in Hamburg, DE
This stunning hand-painted icon from the mid-19th century is a remarkable example of religious art steeped in tradition and spiritual symbolism. Icons have long held a significant role in Orthodox Christianity, serving as windows to the divine and tools for prayer and contemplation. Crafted with meticulous attention to detail, this piece exemplifies the skill and devotion of its maker. The wooden panel and frame are entirely gilded, lending the icon a luminous and reverent quality. The outlines of the Madonna have been finely etched into the gilding, while her face and hands, along with those of the Christ Child, are delicately painted in oil. This contrast between the warm glow of the gold and the naturalistic rendering of the figures creates a powerful visual and emotional impact. Adding to its authenticity, the base of the icon features a Cyrillic inscription, hinting at its origins and cultural significance. The craftsmanship and style suggest it was created during the mid-19th century, making it not only a sacred object but also an invaluable piece of history. This icon is a perfect addition to any collection of religious art or as a meaningful decorative piece for your home. It can be displayed in a devotional space, hung on a gallery wall, or placed on a shelf to create a focal point that inspires reflection and reverence. Whether you are an experienced collector or a first-time buyer, this gilded icon...

"Saint Didacus of Alcalá". Polychromed Wood. Brazilian School, 18th Century
Located in Madrid, ES
On a pedestal stands the figure of a young man dressed in the Franciscan habit. He wears his clothes in front of him with his left hand, revealing a handful of flowers, while raising his right. Saint Didacus of Alcalá de Henares (known in spanish as San Diego de Alcalá) was a Spanish Franciscan saint who lived between the end of the 14th century and 1463. One of the moments of his life that is most chosen for his representation is one in which, disregarding the prohibitions of his superior, he distributed bread to the poor and, to surprise him, a brother checked his clothes, finding flowers in them instead of the food he had hidden. He was canonized by Pope Sixtus V in 1588, at the request of Philip II. Throughout the 18th century Brazil experienced a great era of economic splendor, due to the exploitation of its gold mines. This wealth was what attracted both European and local talents, and gave rise to a baroque era of great importance, with a particular flowering of sculpture. However, given that the majority of work prior to the 20th century is anonymous, there are numerous difficulties in assigning works. It should be noted that this artistic style did not reach the country until well into the 18th century, especially thanks to Portuguese emigrants, and it took on peculiar characteristics (especially in Minas Gerais) immediately. The present sculpture belongs to the Brazilian school, as the features of the saint clearly demonstrate. In addition, it has been carried out in the manner of Antonio Francisco...
