Goyard Trunk A Rare Early 20th Century Steamer or Wardrobe Trunk by Goyard

About the Item

A Fine and Rare Early 20th Century Steamer or Wardrobe Trunk by Goyard of Paris. French - Paris c.1910-1920 Covered in the trademark Goyardine chevron pattern canvas with contrasting leather trim, this fine trunk was designed for the golden age of luxury travel in the early 20th century. This trunk would have been used on board an ocean liner or yacht to carry the wealthy owner's clothes and other accessories. Although we do not know the identity of the owner, the piece does have the added advantage of that person's initials painted on to the outer canvas in two places. We know, therefore, that their initials were W. B-L and that they were clearly someone of great wealth and equally great taste. Steamer trunks by Goyard were made in a variety of sizes with this particular configuration being amongst the most practical and desirable today. The folding lid at the top can be used as a dressing aid, supporting all manner of accessories such as hairbrushes and cosmetics in its open position-acting as a tray in other words. The folding doors below conceal a hanging space suitable for storing suits or long dresses, keeping them safe and crease-free during transit. There is also a single closed accessory storage / shoe box which is stored in front of the hanging section when the trunk is closed. This Goyard trunk has been beautifully maintained and very well handled over its voyages with all the components of the interior wardrobe in excellent condition which is rarely found. Goyard continues to be one of the most famous names in luggage and leather goods to this day, having made for a variety of other luxury brands in the past as well as retailing under its own label. Items of vintage luggage are particularly desirable however-the added romance of years gone by and the patination accrued through years of careful use making these pieces wonderful talking points in the home and highly collectable.
