Period Gothic Oak Trunk or Chest Façade from Picardie France, circa 1550
Located in Dallas, TX
Often when centuries-old trunks did not survive the passage of time, 19th-century menuisiers (French woodworkers) would salvage the surviving wood and carve new furniture such as desks and similar trunks. The facade was typically the most ornate section of these antique trunks, making intact frontages highly valued antiques. Hand-carved from oak in Picardie, France, circa 1550, this period Gothic architectural is a beautiful example of an antique trunk facade that was not incorporated into a more recent furnishing. Picardie is a former administrative region in northern France that is home to many Gothic cathedrals. The Amiens Cathedral (mid-13th century) is the largest standing cathedral in Europe and is truly a masterpiece of Gothic architecture.
Our trunk frontage has five vertically oriented inset panels embellished with various forms of Gothic tracery, including high-arching niches...

16th Century Adoration of the Shepherds Painting Oil on Copper by Carnevale
Located in Milan, IT
Domenico Carnevale (Sassuolo, 1524 - Modena, 1579) Adoration of the Shepherds
Oil on copper, 42 x 28 cm
Frame 54 x 36 cm
Expert opinion of Prof. Emilio Negro
The painting represents the Adoration of the Shepherds, the Child in the center, next to the Madonna kneeling in prayer and an angel behind her; towards him in the foreground a woman with a child in her arms, a shepherd with a sheep on the right, a bagpiper on the left and various other male and female characters turn to him. The architectures of the background, between which a glimpse of the landscape can be glimpsed, are hidden in the upper part by the clouds, where a "celestial glory" encamps with three flying angels.
The painting shows mannerist characters that can be traced back to the second half of the sixteenth century, and can be traced back to an author from the Modena area, with stylistic references to the Bolognese Samacchini (1532 - 1577) and Passerotti (1529 - 1592). More precisely, it can be attributed to Domenico Carnevale (1524-1579), one of the most important masters of the sixteenth century active in the local area. The Carnival was formed in Emilia, his homeland, where he worked for many years. However, his works also show a clear Roman influence, dictated by a long experience in the city, during which he also dedicated himself to the restoration of the Sistine Chapel. Trained in the late-mannerist environment of Modena, he is also linked to the Parmesan Corrorese and Ferrarese Dossesque tradition; Carnival also always maintains a slight archaic sentiment in his work,
The main stylistic reference must be identified in a work similar in subject and iconographic setting, coming from the church of the Pio Istituto Orfanelle di San Geminiano di Modena, currently part of the Art Collection of the Province, attributed to the same influence as the Carnival. Another interesting comparison should be identified with A Presentation of Jesus in the Temple...

16th Century Renaissance Two-Bodied Cabinet
Located in Saint-Ouen, FR
Former collection Altounian
At the beginning of the reign of Henri II (1547-1559) the furniture’s ornamentation evolves. The few medieval motifs that were still used are eventually relinquished. Furniture becomes more sober showcasing moulded panels and perfect architecture. Cabinet-makers use ornaments such as curved fluted or plain columns, feather quills, roses or winged putti heads. High-relief carving becomes more scarce and compositions lighter. To that end cabinet-makers draw inspiration from Fontainebleau motifs filtering them and adapting them to French taste.
During this period cabinet-makers turn into a kind of architects. Indeed the architectural balance of furniture is the centre of their concerns. The study of Antic formulas is then a necessity. From this care given to proportions appear refined cabinets with pure lines.
This style is characteristic of the reign of Henri II and disappears soon after under the regency of Catherine de Medici (1560-1574) when an abundance of high and low-relief ornaments comes back on furnitures.
This two-bodies cabinet...

Tabernacle Door, Wood, Metal, 16th Century
Located in Madrid, ES
This type of elements are basic in churches, chapels, etc. since they contain the Sacred Forms, reason why it is logical the abundance, with a series of typologies more habitual and traditional or old than others. There are also iconographies more common than others, a certain thematic preference according to the date or school to which the work belongs, etc., always related to the Sacrifice of Christ, Salvation, Transubstantiation, Eucharist, etc. for being a key element for Christianity (especially the Catholic) what they will always contain.
The present work shows a chalice with Sacred Form in what would originally be the interior of the door (very usual iconography) and a somewhat more striking relief to the exterior. Inside that it is a Eucharistic Christ or Eucharistic Savior, the way of presenting it is more usual of the scenes of the Last Supper, being not so frequent to find it alone like this. Compare for example with works such as the door of the tabernacle attributed to Alonso Cano...

A moulded cornice sits above the high, panelled back with fluting and applied roundels. The later, metal pin on the left edge releases the central, moulded panel in the back which retains its original hinges. When the pin is removed the panel can be lowered, revealing a large area behind. The scroll arms are supported by tapering turnings which can be compared with mid-16th century benches of the nave such as those in the churches in Gerberoy and Coivrel which are in Oise, the Piccardie region of Frances.
