Renaissance Cathedra with Perspective Motif

About the Item

RENAISSANCE CHAYÈRE WITH PERSPECTIVE MOTIF ORIGIN: FRANCE, LYON ÉPOQUE: FIRST HALF OF THE XVI CENTURY Height: 166cm Width: 74cm Depth: 47cm Walnut wood From: Château de Quintin’s ancient collection This chayere or cathedra was made for a a high dignitary. Thus, each important residence had this prestigious seat. In a seigneurial dwelling, it could be isolated and surmounted by a canopy, or even placed on one or more steps intended to raise its owner above his guests. This beautiful and sober cathedra, in sculped walnut wood, presents elegant ligns. It rises on a trunk-shaped base whose sides are decorated with square panels molded and worked in relief. They are framed by fluted pilasters. The flap serving as a seat hides a chest. The two flat armrests, independent of the structure, rest on columns turned into balusters to which their bulbous form confers much character. The high back is framed by two balusters. The central panel is carved with a coffered vault with roses launched on fluted pilasters worked in perspective. This motif, very much used in Italy, present on a piece of furniture of French tradition, is a testimony of the migration of Italian decorations to France at the beginning of the 16th century through the Rhone valley. It is however quite rare. The cathedra ends with an entablature obeying classical architectural standards. This cathedra made of a beautiful walnut is a piece of furniture from Lyon in the early 16th century.

  • Renaissance Palace Wardrobe with Perspectival Views
    Located in Saint-Ouen, FR
A rare carved walnut wardrobe opening with four door-leaves and two drawers in the lower part. The doors bear architectural views in low reliefs, fluted pilasters and Ionic capitals. Upper Body Two door-leaves with carved architectural perspectives open the wardrobe framed by three fluted pilasters with Ionic capitals. Each door-leaf depict two semi-circular arcades whose cornice and base shows a central vanishing point. Likewise the pavement’s lines act for the artisan as a way to create depth. The vaulting instead leads us to think the vanishing point has to be situated where the handle is, between the two complementaries reliefs. The elegant moulded belt hides an internal secret space, accessible through a moveable plank in the upper body. Lower Body Two door-leaves identical to those of the upper body framed by three fluted pilasters with Doric capitals. The base of the wardrobe opens with two large drawers. The sides also bear panels depicting architectural perspectives. The external pilasters share their Ionic capital with the facade’s pilasters. Thus we can observe on the wardrobe’s sides the capital’s lateral parts with the elegant volute specific to the Ionic order. This palace wardrobe is topped by an overlapping cornice standing on three consoles for the facade and two consoles on each sides. Placed right above the pilasters each console are adorned by fully expanded leaves. During the 15th century a major interest for architecture and perspective studies arises and influences patrons tastes. The work of great theorists such as Leon Battista Alberti...

A moulded cornice sits above the high, panelled back with fluting and applied roundels. The later, metal pin on the left edge releases the central, moulded panel in the back which retains its original hinges. When the pin is removed the panel can be lowered, revealing a large area behind. The scroll arms are supported by tapering turnings which can be compared with mid-16th century benches of the nave such as those in the churches in Gerberoy and Coivrel which are in Oise, the Piccardie region of Frances. The panelled, box seat has later 18th century hinges...
