About the Item

Sold as a set of (6) The McGuire "Balboa" chairs are a triumph in the world of Mid-Century furniture. The artistic expression of elements and architecture are sublime. A classic marriage of Eastern and Western sensibilities. The chairs feature McGuire’s signature woven rawhide binding, generous seats, and gracefully curved armrests. The rattan has a dark tobacco color and tone that is difficult to appreciate until you see it in person. Designed by John & Elinor McGuire in the 1950s, we estimate the birth of these beauties between 1950s and 1960s. Each chair has an etched brass label with words "McGuire San Francisco". Featuring Craftsman details, the Balboa Chair is classic form that could fit many different spaces. Strong and architectural, its dramatic shape and detailed craftsmanship command attention. The arms curve to meet the back of the chair with a signature woven rawhide binding; the lines of the backrest are echoed strikingly by the lines of the armrests. Finished in Dark Tobacco loose loose seat cushions. The armchairs have the additional lower back pillows. John and Elinor McGuire were breakthrough innovators. Imaginative and uncompromising, they mixed incredible materials, forms, texture and ideas to create furniture and environments that were chic and timeless. They had an innate sense of everything that defined California casual. Tulip Group Lounge Chairs in Rosewood by K M Wilkins for G-Plan of England
By Percival Lafer, G Plan Furniture, Charles and Ray Eames, Thonet
Located in Chattanooga, TN
Matching sofa also available and sold separately (see last pic). This incredible set was purchased new in Glasgow, Scotland in 1970. We acquired from the original owners who kept them in pristine condition. Designed by K.M. Wilkins for G-Plan of England, this line is appropriately named the "Tulip Group". Wilkins also designed the the well known Housemaster Chair, often misattributed to Ib Kofod Larsen. The "Tulip" design is demonstrated by the rosewood panels which are molded into curves that mimic a blossoming flower. Offered almost exclusively in teak, this rosewood set is truly a rare find. The rich, amber-red panels are perfectly complimented by the chrome hardware and velvet fabric. The luxuriously soft velvet is in amazing condition. The color is difficult to describe, but in our opinion, it's a cross between olive-green and taupe-brown. Of course the refraction of light on velvet can magnify or minimize the tones and highlights depending on the angle and environment. Both chairs hover on their original Magnum Orbit chrome...
