Mid-Century 1954 Vintage Mathieu Matégot Santiago Armchair

About the Item

Mathieu Matégot was a Hungarian designer renowned for his innovative use of multiple industrial materials such as wood, leather and metal. For the Santiago chair designed in 1954, he used a perforated sheet metal. He was the first designer to adapt it to furniture design. The Santiago chair later became one of his most famous creations, standing out for the unusual structure, colour and texture. The Santiago Armchair, designed by Mathieu Matégot around 1954–1955, is a striking example of post-war French modernism and showcases Matégot’s signature style. Created by Les Ateliers Matégot, the chair is known for its innovative use of perforated metal, a material that became a hallmark of his work. The frame is made of black lacquered metal, while the seat and backrest are crafted from yellow lacquered perforated sheet metal, giving the armchair both visual lightness and structural strength. Matégot was a pioneer in merging industrial materials with elegant design. His development of techniques like "rigiband"—which used perforated metal slats—enabled the creation of furniture that was both functional and sculptural. The Santiago Armchair reflects this approach perfectly: it’s minimalist in form but rich in character and technical sophistication. Today, the Santiago Armchair is a highly collectible piece, admired for its rarity, craftsmanship, and the way it embodies the spirit of 1950s design innovation. It stands as a testament to Matégot’s vision—blending art, architecture, and industrial technique into timeless furniture. Literature: P.
