Special Pierre Jeanneret Student Chair

About the Item

It’s difficult to overstate the beauty of this particular example of Pierre Jeanneret’s solid teak Student Chair. Yes, the patina and caning are both exceptional, but there’s something else uniquely arresting about this chair. After looking through the archives of the major auction houses (back to 2006) as well as photographs from well known dealers, we could only find one instance where the desk attachment forms a right angle at the edge. It surprisingly appears in a cover photo for a 2008 New York Times article, “A City That Sat on Its Treasures, but Didn’t See Them.” But what actually makes this chair truly special is the curved wood seat frame, which we have not been able to find on any other student chair. What exactly does this mean? Certainly the level of carpentry to achieve this form would prevent mass production. One plausible theory is that it was a special commission for an important government official who needed one in their private office or residence. The truth is we just don’t know, and probably never will. Similar to the folding kangaroo chair or the floating back easy chair, this unmarked student chair is a genuine variant, an outlier. Twenty-five years after the first French dealers purchased Pierre Jeanneret furniture from the government of India we are still encountering seemingly unsolvable design mysteries. Undoubtedly, these stories from Chandigarh continue to inspire collectors and design enthusiasts as much as the furniture itself. Ships from Philadelphia.
