About the Item

Writing chair by Pierre Jeanneret. Pierre Jeanneret (1896-1967) was a Swiss architect and designer known for his significant contributions to 20th-century modernist architecture and furniture design. He was a cousin and close collaborator of the renowned architect Le Corbusier (Charles-Édouard Jeanneret-Gris), and together, they played a pivotal role in shaping the modernist movement. One of the most notable projects that Jeanneret and Le Corbusier worked on was the planning and design of Chandigarh, a city in northern India. They were commissioned by the Indian government to design the city as the capital of the Punjab region after India gained independence in 1947. Jeanneret played a significant role in the urban planning and architectural design of Chandigarh, which is known for its modernist architecture and innovative urban layout. Pierre Jeanneret designed this writing chair with a single paddle arm for the Chandigarh Administration building project in India. There is stencilled white lettering to the rear of the chair, which may be a maker’s mark. These chairs would have mainly been used in the classrooms and lecture halls. Pierre Jeanneret also made significant contributions to modern furniture design. He, along with Le Corbusier and Charlotte Perriand, designed a series of iconic furniture pieces known as the "LC" collection.

"Office Armchair" by Pierre Jeanneret, circa 1955
By Pierre Jeanneret
Located in London, GB
Authentic 'Office Chair' from the administrative buildings of Chandigarh (Ref. PJ-SI-28-B). In excellent condition - joints have been restored and cane work replaced. Pierre Jeanneret (22 March 1896 - 4 December 1967) was a Swiss architect who collaborated with his cousin, Le Corbusier, designing furniture for Le Corbusier's vast modernist complex at Chandigarh. Jeanneret remained for over 15 years as the project’s chief architect and the city remains a masterpiece of the modern vision. The pair pioneered a new aesthetic that placed function and order over embellishment—Jeanneret’s work imbuing the strict geometry of modernism with lighter materials like cane and wood. Jeanneret also collaborated with other modern masters, Charlotte Perriand on experiments in aluminium and wood, and Jean Prouve developing prefabricated housing.
