About the Item

Vintage very rare "Grand Italia" black leather and enameled steel daybed designed by De Pas, D'Urbino, Lomazzi for Zanotta, Italy, circa 1979. This iconic daybed consists of black enameled steel frame, leather straps and elastic belts. The mattress and cushion are down-filled and covered with soft black Italian leather. Very comfortable! Maker's mark in the form of a metal plaque is still attached as pictured. Slight and characteristic traces of wear due to age. De Pas, D'Urbino and Lomazzi were born in Milan in the 1930s. They have been partners in designing architecture, objects, installations and furnishings, as well as town planning, since 1966. During the 1960s they focused especially on temporary furniture and buildings featuring avant-garde signs, materials and industrial technologies. They designed and built several inflatable houses for the Italian Pavilion at the Osaka World Expo and the 14th Milan Triennale. In 1972 they took part in the exhibit "Italy: The New Domestic Landscape" at New York's M.o.M.A. At the same time, through a host of installations they tested “borderline” creations standing between architecture and design, including installations for the exhibit "Italienische Möbel Design 1950/80" in Cologne. In 1979 they received the Compasso d'Oro award. Their works are owned by the major museums worldwide.

Osvaldo Borsani for Tecno sofa 'D70', enameled steel base, brass hardware, cognac leather upholstery. Osvaldo Borsani's sofa 'D70' was presented at the Triennale of Milan in 1954 where it won the Gold Medal for design. Not only the design is extraordinary, so is the technology. With a single twist the back and seating are positioned upwards or down, all to create the highest comfort for the sofa or daybed. This fine example was ordered new from Tecno in 2006 in beautiful Poltrona Frau leather in cognac, Tecno color number 2201. The exact same leather is also applied regularly in Ferrari cars as Cuoio leather. The design of the sofa is inspired by car seating, the Ferrari leather...

Johannes Spalt 'Constanze' Sofa Daybed in Black Leather and Steel
Located in Waalwijk, NL
Johannes Spalt for Wittmann, sofa or daybed, leather, chrome-plated steel, Austria, 1960s. This mid-century modern sofa is designed by the acclaimed Austrian furniture designer Johannes Spalt. The design is characterized by a solid construction based on sharp lines and angular shapes noticeable in the body of the seat and the chromed steel base, underlining the clear structured design. The metal legs elevate the seat in a graceful way, which establish an open and more transparent look to the whole unit. The tufted seat with buttons is upholstered in black leather. As outcome, this creates more visual interest and adds a graphical touch to the quite simplistic design. By only one hand movement the 'Constance' transforms from a comfortable sofa to daybed. A very elegant and also nifty technique. Johannes Spalt (1920-2010) was a postwar Austrian architect. In 1952 he founded the collective "Arbeitsgruppe 4" together with Wilhelm Holzbauer, Friedrich Kurrent and Otto Leitner. Their ideas and designs are still a great example of Austrian architecture...
