About the Item

A set of 4 black lacquered “Bankstuhl” Chairs designed by Swiss designer, Willy Guhl in 1959. This set of four dining chairs are emblematic of one of Willy Guhl's personal aphorisms, "achieving the most with minimum effort". Whilst Guhl's designs in cement remain some of his most memorable, this dining set is similarly imbued with a sense of elevated functionalism. A simple design anchored in contrast, the angular, dark frames of this set are juxtaposed against the pale caned seat and backs. Guhl declared that his designs "must be useful to people", and the "Bankstuhl" chair lives true to this assertion. The name "Bankstuhl" literally translates to "bench chair", referencing the secondary use for the set. When lined up, the chairs align to create a bench which would integrate seamlessly into any tight space as a refined occasional seating option. Not just limited to the dining room, the "Bankstuhl" is truly a design to be lived with not around, just as Guhl intended.

Black Leather Hammock Chair, Mogens Voltelen, circa 1930
By Mogens Voltelen
Located in London, GB
The interplay of straight and curved lines within the chair’s design is very visually satisfying. The rhythm of lines is evident not only in the mahogany wood frame but within the leather too. The seat and back having a hammock construction mean the leather is allowed to bow naturally. The continuous curve that the back legs are carved into and the apron (wooden rail across the front) at the front of the chair both echo the exact arc of the leather hammock...
