About the Item

Pair of 1940s Jindřich Halabala H-227 Bentwood Armchairs with Original Upholstery Offered here is a rare and refined pair of Model H-227 armchairs designed by celebrated Czech modernist Jindřich Halabala in the 1940s. Unlike the more commonly seen H-269 model, the H-227 features a taller, slightly more angular backrest and compact form, making it particularly well-suited for reading corners, lounges, or stylish reception areas. These chairs were produced by UP Závody, one of the leading manufacturers in Czechoslovakia’s modernist movement. The standout feature is the pair’s signature sinuous bentwood armrests, crafted from beechwood and stained in a warm walnut tone. The arms loop outward in a sculptural arc that is both aesthetically striking and functionally supportive. With time, the wood has developed a rich natural patina, enhancing the depth and authenticity of the piece. The chairs retain their original 1940s red jacquard upholstery, which features a subtle repeating diamond motif and elegant piping detail in a warm gold tone. This original fabric is extremely rare to find intact and adds significant historical and visual value. That said, for daily use or to suit a contemporary interior, reupholstery is recommended. These chairs exemplify Halabala’s philosophy of marrying utility with high design. His pioneering use of bentwood gave rise to some of the most enduring silhouettes in 20th-century European furniture, and the H-227 is no exception. Its ergonomic back, generous seat depth, and compact footprint make it a favorite among interior designers and collectors alike. Perfect as lounge chairs in a minimalist or mid-century interior, these pieces also sit comfortably in Art Deco, eclectic, or even Japandi-styled environments. Whether displayed as-is or customized with modern fabric, they offer timeless design and Central European craftsmanship. 📐 Dimensions (Each Chair): Height: 78 cm / 30.7 in Width: 67 cm / 26.4 in Depth: 80 cm / 31.5 in Seat Height: 43 cm / 16.9 in Designer: Jindřich Halabala Model: H-227 Manufacturer: UP Závody Origin: Czechoslovakia, 1940s Condition: Very good vintage condition; solid structure; original upholstery with light wear; reupholstery recommended for frequent use Sold As: Set of 2
