About the Item

Pair of early 1990's production Getsuen & Rose Flower lounge chairs by Japanese designer Masanori Umeda for Edra Italy 1990 Very rare to find 2 early production examples now combined as a pair with its original velvet upholstery! - The Rose Chair has its original upholstery still in good condition, the aluminium legs show some aging corrosion under the coating and the red velvet has minor fading by UV light - The Getsuen Chair has its original upholstery but faded more and has more user wear, a few small tears to the fabric and would be a candidate for new upholstery Bespoke Upholstery It will be possible to re-upholster these chairs in a matching velvet fabric colour of your choice in our in-house upholstery atelier, normally a very labour intensive project as all parts have been originally hand stitched by Edra A perfect opportunity to make a bespoke matching pair of flower chairs that will be the star of the show in any interior project Please inquire if you have special requirements and our upholstery team will give you the options possible Measurements: Getsuen (Lilly) W97cm x D90cm x H87cm Seating height 45cm Rose W85cm x D83 x H76.5 Seating height 45cm From Elle Decor 07-21-2020 Italian stories for Edra: MASANORI UMEDA AND THE SIGN THAT BECOMES POETRY His seats are real icons that have just turned 30. To make them unmistakable is the organic nature of the forms inspired by flowers, poetically interpreted through petals that welcome those who sit. In their sign there is the whole personality of the Japanese architect and designer, who had fun mixing oriental sensibility with pop irreverence, who in Edra found the "partner in crime" for his originality. Masanori Umeda was born in 1941 and graduated from the Kuwasawa design school in Tokyo in 1962. Five years later he moved to Milan where he started working at the studio of Achille and Piergiacomo Castiglioni, a very important training experience for the architect from Kanagawa, that was followed, from 1970 to 1979, by a period of consultancy at Olivetti in Ivrea. Back to Japan, he founded his own studio: U-Metadesign Inc, keeping links with Italy where he continued to create works that have marked the history of design. The numerous and varied experiences have made Umeda a multifaceted artist able to combine delicacy and rigor, accompanying the combination with solid technical knowledge. This is how Getsuen armchair was born, with its maquette Masanori Umeda presented himself for the first time at Edra offices to show a lily-shaped seat. Behind the visionary idea (and the welcoming aspect of the flower) there was a complex steel structure expertly modeled. A timeless object signed by an award-winning author. The ongoing dialogue with the company's technical office was fundamental for the creation of Getsuen. Thanks to the close collaboration, a unique object has come to life in which high technology has married executive virtuosity without renouncing the pop soul of the project, born from a vision of Umeda. One night, says the author, returning home with the full moon, he saw a flower in the garden, a bell of his wife, illuminated by white light. At that moment he had had the inspiration for the famous armchair and for the subsequent ones that compose Edra Flowers Collection. A curiosity: Getsuen means "garden with a full moon".

Iconic Super Rare Original Edition 'Libro' Chair by Gruppo Dam, Busnelli, 1970
By Gruppo DAM (Designer Associati Milano), G14, Busnelli
Located in bergen op zoom, NL
Amazing and super rare original edition of the iconic ,radical 'libro' chair designed in 1970 by Gruppo DAM (Designer Associati Milano) in collaboration with the avant garde design group 'Gruppo G14' . Dimensions, please note the seating height, height and length of this chair is variable depending on how the seating leaves and enameled steel frame are arranged, only the width of the seat is fixed. The dimensions quoted are only one of the many possible and are for the seating elements as arranged in the last photo. The 'Libro'—meaning “book” in Italian—takes its form quite literally. Ten thin wedges are stacked on each other, hinged at the apex of an articulated enameled steel frame. What unfolds is an object with a childlike sense of discovery, offering an extraordinary range of seating positions depending on the flipping of each “page” along the spine. It demonstrates the re-envisioning of industrial design into a subversive lifestyle tool. And for a chair that cleanly falls into Italy’s postwar radical design movement of the late 1960s and early ’70s, it’s surprisingly functional—as practical as it is playfully outlandish. Undoubtedly, its originality, its simplicity, its ease of use, and its versatility make this sculpture-like armchair attractive to lovers of beauty and collectors interested in the conception and cultural process of design. Chairs from the original edition , finished in shiny vinyl, were originally produced in tiny numbers by 'Busnelli', as you can imagine at the time this design was considered too avant-garde and conceptual for the taste of the mass market. This example suffers from the same fate as per 95% of the original edition chairs in that the type of vinyl used proved to be particularly sensitive to UV light so over the passing years the surface layer of the vinyl upholstery has cracked significantly , some may see this as a flaw but it proves the originality of this museum piece and the chances of today finding an original edition chair without this vinyl surface cracking are effectively and unfortunately next to none. Today these extremely rare and early iconic examples of italian radical...
