Rare Kipp Stewart for Summit Furniture California Outdoor Lounge Set – Settee

About the Item

A rare and highly collectible four-piece slatted lounge set designed by celebrated American designer Kipp Stewart for Summit Furniture, Carmel, California, circa 1980s. This sculptural ensemble showcases Stewart’s signature approach to clean lines, fluid curves, and functional beauty—hallmarks of West Coast modernism. The set includes a gracefully curved three-seat settee, two matching barrel-back lounge chairs, and a circular ottoman or cocktail table, all crafted from solid hardwood (believed to be teak) with a slatted construction that offers both durability and visual lightness. The steam-bent framing and elegant open-back design are reminiscent of early California modern design sensibilities, ideal for both indoor and outdoor living spaces. Each piece features gentle, rounded contours and an ergonomic slat arrangement that highlight the craftsmanship of Summit Furniture, an acclaimed maker known for its luxury outdoor collections. The set retains its original Summit brass maker's tag, marked with serial number #14343, further confirming its authenticity and collectible value. The set comes with the original green and white striped upholstered cushions, which lend a bold, nautical flair. The frames show signs of weathering and patina, adding to their authentic vintage character. Structurally sound and visually compelling, these pieces are suitable for use as-is or an excellent candidate for refinishing and reupholstery to fit a bespoke design vision. Ideal for collectors, interior designers, or anyone seeking timeless California design, this set embodies the casual sophistication of 20th-century outdoor luxury. Perfect for a coastal retreat, Palm Springs patio, or curated sunroom. KIPP STEWART, a highly regarded American furniture designer, has left an indelible mark on the industry. Trained as an architect, Stewart’s disciplined approach and profound respect for traditional craftsmanship earned him a distinguished reputation within the design profession. His acclaimed furniture pieces are celebrated for their simple yet elegantly functional designs. Having spent significant time studying in Europe, Kipp Stewart developed a deep appreciation for history and classical forms, which significantly influenced his work. He also credits the late Charles Eames, with whom he collaborated, as an important source of inspiration. Throughout his career, Stewart was the recipient of numerous industry accolades, recognizing his exceptional talent and contributions. Priced competitively due to need for refinishing.
