Louis XVI Furniture

LOUIS XVI STYLE

Reflecting the final era of royal opulence before the upheaval of the French Revolution, antique Louis XVI furniture features more angular shapes than the Rococo curves of the Louis XV style, harkening back to the imposing grandeur of Louis XIV.

Dating between 1750 and 1800, an era that overlapped with the last king of France whose reign was cut short by the guillotine, Louis XVI furniture, known as the goût grec, is emblematic of the neoclassical revision that French furniture underwent during the second half of the 18th century.

Authentic Louis XVI furniture characteristics include clean lines and carved details such as scrolls and acanthus flourishes that were inspired by ancient Greece and Rome. This was informed by a burgeoning interest in antiquity in the 18th century, owing to new archaeological excavations at sites including Pompeii and Herculaneum. It largely eclipsed the more East Asian–influenced ornamentation of Louis XV for something more geometric and symmetrical.

The Louis XVI style was defined by what was being created for the palatial rooms at Versailles and Fontainebleau, particularly for the queen, with cabinetmaker Jean-Henri Riesener being a favorite of Marie-Antoinette’s for his luxurious pieces accented with gilded bronze and marquetry. Furniture maker Jean-Baptiste-Claude Sené was also a major designer of the period, with his pieces for the royal residences adorned with giltwood and neoclassical touches like tapered columns for chair legs and laurel leaf carvings. Cabinetmaker Adam Weisweiler occasionally incorporated into his furniture porcelain panels produced by Sèvres, a popular manufacturer of European ceramics that served the crown with serveware, vases and other decorative objects.

Located in London, GB
Very fine Louis XVI style ormolu-mounted marquetry commode French, Early 20th Century Height 95cm, width 162cm, depth 59cm After an important model by Jean-Henri Riesener (French, 1734-1806), a highly renowned ebeniste of great standing, this exceptional commode is of outstanding quality, and fully embodies the quality of craftsmanship and great artistic style of the Louis XVI period and the original piece, which is currently housed in the Chateau de Fontainebleau, France. Large and Important Louis XVI Style Console Table from Blairsden House
Located in Hudson, NY
This very impressive console table comes from the famous American Country house Blairsden. This house built in Peapack NJ for C. Ledyard Blair and Mrs. Florence Blair between 1898 and 1903. The house was created and decorated by the important architectural firm of Carrere & Hastings. The firm produced many homes, churches, monuments and public buildings for America's gilded age notables. Blairsden boasts extensive landscaped gardens in the manner of the French Baroque in the tradition of Andre Le Notre. The interiors as well where extensively set out and incorporated appropriate French and English furniture complimenting the decorative schemes. No expense was spared to create this house and grounds based on the ideals of Edwardian splendor and the ideal modern residence. This house was listed in 1903 upon its completion in the survey of American Estates & Gardens published by Barr Ferree. While much was spoken of its location, setting, architectural accomplishments and style the summation of the listing called "Blairsden one of the most elaborate and extensive schemes of its kind ever carried out in America." This table was formally part of the dining rooms complete redecoration by the architectural firm carried out in 1913. The room was originally planned around dark paneling and a warm even family-style catering to their children. The new rooms scheme was greatly enlarged and lightened up considerably by extensive plasterwork and painting in the Adams style. This table and a mate was used to center two opposing walls and complimented the inset painted panels and plasterwork ceiling which contained many references to swags, pateria, and other classical motifs. This table has been pictured in several period photographs and the house is extensively spoken of in the comprehensive book published in 2006 by Acanthus Press encompassing the principles ideals and the extent of there work especially in the Beaux-Arts...

Boin-Taburet & Faberge, - 8pc. 950 Sterling Tea Set + 6 Faberge Espresso Cups
Located in Wilmington, DE
Direct from Paris, A Magnificent 8-piece Sterling Silver Tea Set by one of France's Premier French Silversmith "Boin-Taburet", and includes 6 Faberge Imperial Egg espresso cups and saucers in fine Limoges porcelain. The world of silver-smithing has witnessed the rise and fall of many notable firms throughout its history. In the realm of French silver-smithing, the name "Boin-Taburet" stands as a symbol of enduring excellence, innovation, and craftsmanship. Fabergé, a name synonymous with opulence, craftsmanship, and unparalleled luxury, has captivated the world for over a century. The brand's remarkable journey from a modest Russian jewelry atelier to a symbol of prestige and sophistication is a testament to its enduring legacy. In 1885 Tsar Alexander III commissioned a lavish Easter egg for his wife, Empress Maria Feodorovna. This magnificent piece, known as the Hen Egg, was an extraordinary fusion of artistry and engineering, setting the stage for what would become Faberge’s most iconic creations - the Imperial Easter Eggs. The Imperial Easter Eggs, a series of intricately designed and meticulously crafted eggs, became the hallmark of Fabergé's artistry. Peter Carl Fabergé and his team of skilled artisans poured their hearts and souls into creating these masterpieces, which were intended as gifts from the Russian Tsars to their wives and mothers. The history of Boin-Taburet is closely linked to the two families that merged to create this iconic firm. The story begins with the Boin family, where Alexis Boin, a skilled silversmith, laid the foundation of the firm. Boin's craftsmanship and artistic abilities were quickly recognized, and his works gained prominence during the early 19th century. The Taburet family, on the other hand, was equally esteemed in the silver-smithing world. Auguste Taburet, known for his intricate designs and fine workmanship, brought the Taburet name to the forefront of French silver-smithing. It was the union of these two families through marriage in 1845 that established the firm known as "Boin-Taburet." The Imperial Easter Eggs not only showcased Fabergé's technical prowess but also solidified the brand's reputation as the jeweler to the Russian imperial family. They were exquisite symbols of love and devotion, and their creation marked a collaborative effort between Fabergé and the Romanov dynasty. The quality and craftsmanship of Boin-Taburet's silverware, exemplified in this stunning tea set, earned the firm a well-deserved reputation. Notably, Boin-Taburet received royal patronage from Emperor Napoleon III, which marked a significant milestone in their history. This recognition catapulted the firm to new heights, and they began creating exquisite pieces for the French royal court. Their exceptional work was displayed at prestigious international exhibitions, further enhancing their reputation on the global stage. The firm's achievements were not limited to France, as Boin-Taburet's pieces found homes in royal collections around the world. This is an amazing 8 piece set and in each of the sterling pieces have been professionally restored to near new condition. Pair of Louis Seize Fire Gilded Candlesticks France 1800 by F. Barbedienne
Located in Salzburg, AT
Pair of strict classicistical fire gilded candlesticks France 1840, signed Barbedienne. Strict classicist design with square base, flowers and leaf ornaments in different finish. Decorated and smooth elements in alternation create otically balanced object. The widest part of the stem is 4.0cm Ferdinand Barbedienne (* August 6, 1810 in Saint-Martin-de-Fresnay, Calvados department, France; † March 21, 1892 in Paris) was a French sculptor, bronze ware manufacturer, and gallery owner. One of the most important and popular Éditeurs d'art, or publishers of art articles, he had most of the French sculptors of his time under contract. Life and work Ferdinand Barbedienne was the son of a farmer. At the age of 13, he learned the Craft of saddlery. In 1822 he moved to Paris, where he first worked as a clerk in a wallpaper shop. He received start-up capital from his employer to open his own store, which he set up on Rue Notre-Dame-de-Lorette in 1834. He pursued the idea of exhibiting bronze statues in addition to his core business and mass producing them in small format. In 1838, he joined forces with the mechanic Achille Collas, who had developed the machine á reduction (réducteur for short); a device based on the principles of the pantograph that could reproduce three-dimensional objects in any size - reduced or enlarged. On November 29, 1838, both signed the founding contract for the company Société Ferdinand Barbedienne et Achille Collas, which aimed to commercially exploit the mechanized production of sculptural works for an initial 20 years. Barbedienne took care of the commercial management of the company, while Collas contributed the patent on his invention and seven existing machines, and with his profound knowledge of machinery was responsible for the production processes. Together they decided on the subject matter of the objects, the selling prices, and all other financial matters. In 1841, they produced casts of the Apollo of Belvedere, the Spinario, and 21 pieces with the motif of a bas-relief of the Parthenon. These were followed by versions of the Laocoon group, the Venus of Arles, and the Borghese Fencer, among others. Special interest was initially shown in works from antiquity, for which casts from the Atelier de Moulage in the Louvre served as models. The company continued to produce works by representatives of the Renaissance such as Michelangelo, Donatello, Giovanni Bologna or by French sculptors such as Jean Goujon, Jean-François Flamand, Pierre Puget, François Girardon, Antoine Coysevox...
