Collection of Five Japanese Oshi-E Textile Art Panels Meiji Period

On offer is a set of five Japanese textile art panels called Oshi-E circa Meiji Period (1868-1912). This usual set of panels depict various aspects of daily life in Edo time with beautiful details. Some of these panels are snapshots of the buzzling commercial activities at the marketplace, providing insight into the signages, architecture, costumes and how people interacted within a historical and pictorial context. Other panels depict daily leisure activities such as lounging in the park or visiting friends. The realistic rendering and attention to details are not short of "photographic" quality. From the signage of the shops to the motions and attires of the individual characters, from the hairstyle, small ornaments, down to the facial expression, were all recorded in great details. Each panel was signed with the artist's name Yukihana in Kanji with a red seal.
These panels are unframed and await your custom touch (framing with inner gilt spacer and mat costs about 250-500 depending on the material chosen, see a framed example in the last picture of a single framed panel we have for sale). We offer them for sale individually, but it will be great for a collector to consider the whole set so that they can stay together.
The Oshi-E (also known as kiritori zaiku) is a type of ornamental textile art dated back to the Muromachi period (1392-1573). It started among the elite aristocratic women in Kyoto before spreading wider in the Japanese society. Throughout Edo and Meiji period, Oshi-E were sometimes used to make offerings to the altars in the temple and in the late 19th century, it was exported to the west along with the other embroidery textile art. The joyful indoor family scene depicting a Christmas and new year's celebration with an elder seated couple, the grandparents, the grandmother holding a toddler on her arms, the grandfather with his smoking pipe by his side, both enjoying a young boy's (grandson) poem recital, while other children await their turn with gifts as the mesmerized young parents Stand and watch in awe. A Christmas tree by the window, a cat sneaking by and a basket with wine and bread awaits being delivered as a gift to the elders. A young boy sits patiently on a chair, an apple and an umbrella by his side. Signed: Fried Ortlieb, München 1873 - (lower right). An engraved brass plaque reads "New Year's at the grandfathers - Friederich Ortlieb 1839-1909) Munich, circa 1873.
Friedrich Ortlieb was an accomplished artist, born in Stuttgart in 1839 and died in Munich on the 4th October 1909. He received his formal art training at the L’Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Stuttgart and also at Steffeck, Berlin. He exhibited widely, though most notably in Dresden and Vienna from 1871. He is best remembered for his genre scenes with children as shown in this finely detailed example of his work. Epitomizing the very best in this genre, Ortlieb depicts the character and personality of the children in joyful situations with accuracy and great sensitivity to the subject matter, a frozen moment in time with so much detail and emotion expressed in the children’s and elder's faces.

William Frederick Timmins was born May 23, 1915 in Chicago, Illinois.
His father, Harry L. Timmins (1887-1963), was a celebrated magazine illustrator and co-owner with Frank H. Young (1888-1964) of a successful Chicago advertising agency called Young & Timmins Advertising Illustration Studios. In 1923 Timmins and Young co-founded the American Academy of Art in Chicago. His father's impressive career brought the family a prosperous and privileged lifestyle, which included pleasure trips to Paris and London.
In 1934 he began to commute by Metro North train to New York City, where he studied at the Art Students League on West 57th Street. He also took classes at the National Academy of Design on Fifth Avenue near 89th Street.
In 1935 he began to study at the Grand Central School of Art, located on the sky-lit top floor of Grand Central Station Terminal. This was the same station he used for his daily commute.
In 1935 he began to sell pen and ink story illustrations as well as painted covers to NYC publishers of pulp magazines. During the second half of the 1930s his work appeared in Western Story, Dime Sports, Clues Detective Stories, Thrilling Western, and All Aces Magazine.
He and his wife moved to a home on Spectacle Lane in Wilton, CT. This area of Connecticut had become a popular artist community. He socialized with several artist neighbors, such as Benjamin Kimberly Prins (1902-1980), Tom Lovell (1909-1997), Richard Lyon (1913-2002), Al Parker (1906-1985), Rolf Klep (1904-1981), R. G. Harris (1911-2007).
During the 1940s his cover illustrations appeared on pulp magazines, such as The Shadow, Clues Detective Stories, Wild West Weekly, and Astounding Science Fiction. All these were published by Street & Smith.
In 1944 the family moved to Darien, CT. At first the artist worked in a rented studio in nearby Norwalk, CT, but after a while he converted a vacant family room into an art studio and worked at home. After the war he drew story illustrations for Family Circle and Liberty Magazine.
In 1948 his father, Harry L. Timmins, and his brother, Harry L. Timmins, Jr., moved to California to open a lithography business in Hollywood.
