1916 Exhibition Catalogue Study by Sonia Delaunay for Stockholm Gallery

About the Item

A vividly-hued and remarkable example of early abstract art which demonstrates the fascination that Sonia and Robert Delaunay had in color theory and intersecting geometries, this watercolor was a maquette painted in preparation for one of Sonia's earliest exhibitions. In 1916 the Nya Konstgalleriet in Stockholm invited her to exhibit a group of her paintings, and for the exhibition catalogue, the artist painted a series of studies or maquettes, including this one. Her painting combines primary colors with pink, orange, pale blue and other complementary hues, creating a vivid whole this is swirling with energy. This venture in Sweden was recently the focus of a special exhibition at the Saint Louis Art Museum. The painting shows an old exhibition or catalogue stamp, and the reverse shows a colorful "label" that may have been executed by the artist. The provenance of this piece starts with Delaunay, and continues through a series of collections in Sweden, Norway and Switzerland.
