Large American abstract modernist impressionist oil painting on masonite board in the great original artist hand painted sgraffito combed decorated wood frame by Zoute ( born Leon Salter, 1903-1976 - North Rose NY ) Zoute was a self taught artist. He was an integral part of the great modern wave. He was well exhibited during his lifetime. He painted from 1940-1954. Upon his beloved wife Thelma's passing in 1954 - he was never to paint again. During the the 1940's - early 1950's he was represented by a number of NYC galleries with one man shows - Mortimer Levitt Gallery, Joseph Heller Gallery, Grand Central Galleries. His work was shown at The Museum of Modern Art NYC, The Whitney Museum NYC and many other prestigious museum galleries across the USA. He was selected to exhibit at the invitation only State University University of Iowa International Show ( 1946-1947 ) along with a very select group of the most important artists of the day, such as Picasso, Braque, Klee. His work was critically acclaimed in the New York Times as being the best colorist of the day. He was highly praised by the painter Arthur Dove - this guy can paint !
