"Zeus and Gods of Olympus", Art Deco Masterpiece by Schmied for "L'Odyssee"
About the Item
This magnificent depiction of Zeus presiding over the gods of Olympus was painted by François-Louis Schmied, one of France's two leading artists specializing in high-end book design and illustration, along with Georges Barbier. Schmied's refined color palette and stylized depiction of the human figure, often in exotic settings, made him highly sought-after in the 1910s and 1920s, before the Depression sapped the wealth of the clients who supported his painting and publishing. Here he depicts Zeus, flanked by Cronos and Rhea, overseeing a cascading group of powerful gods, including Apollo, Diana, Athena, Mercury and Mars. This is an original gouache painting, not a pochoir, and was painted for "L'Odyssee," one of his greatest works. Schmied illustrated and/or published a line of exquisite volumes, including "Les Climats," "Daphne," "Le Cantique des cantiques," "Les Douze Cesars," and "Kim." This work is signed in the lower righthand corner. Dimensions include matte and frame; the visible painting itself is 8.25 inches high by 5.5 inches wide.
