"Greek Goddess", Original Art Deco Painting for "L'Odyssée" by Schmied, 1928

About the Item

This richly detailed painting of a Greek goddess in Classical robes, standing atop a flight of steps with two heavily veiled attendants below, was made by François-Louis Schmied, one of France's two leading artists specializing in high-end book design and illustration, along with Georges Barbier. Schmied's refined color palette and stylized depiction of the human figure, often in exotic settings, made him highly sought-after in the 1910s and 1920s, before the Depression sapped the wealth of the clients who supported his painting and publishing. Schmied illustrated and/or published a line of exquisite volumes, including "Les Climats," "Daphne," "Le Cantique des cantiques," "Les Douze Cesars," "L'Odyssee," and "Kim." This original work is gouache on paper (not a pochoir), and is monogrammed in the lower righthand corner. Dimensions include matte and frame; the visible painting itself is 8.5 inches high by 6 inches wide.
