"Playing Ball", Superb Art Deco Painting w/ Male Nudes by François-Louis Schmied
About the Item
This vivid and sensual painting of two nude male figures, each ready to toss a ball into the air, was executed by François-Louis Schmied, one of France's two leading artists specializing in high-end book design and illustration, along with Georges Barbier. Schmied's refined color palette and stylized depiction of the human figure, often in exotic settings, made him highly sought-after in the 1910s and 1920s, before the Depression sapped the wealth of the clients who supported his painting and publishing. This work may have been painted for a proposed book on sports which was never realized. In his heyday, Schmied illustrated and/or published a line of exquisite volumes, including "Les Climats," "Daphne," "Le Cantique des cantiques," "Les Douze Cesars," "L'Odyssee," and "Kim." This work is gouache on paper, and is signed in the lower righthand corner. Dimensions include matte and frame; the visible painting itself is 8 inches high by 5 inches wide.
