Masami Teraoka McDonald's Hamburgers Invading Japan Geisha Tattooed Woman Print
About the Item
A wonderful lithograph print by famed Japanese American artist Masami Teraoka titled "McDonald's Hamburgers Invading Japan/Geisha and Tattooed Woman" from his series McDonald's Hamburgers Invading Japan. The series examines cultural homogenization while offering a social and historical critique of the meeting point between East and West cultures. This work features a tattooed woman eating a bowl of soup with a Geisha holding a burger behind her and a running dialogue between the two characters printed in the lower margin: TW, Tattooed Woman; "Well I'm going to start eating now - G, Geisha "Are you really going to eat that noodle soup" TW: "Yes I'm starving. I hope you don't mind my slurping." - G: "How am I supposed to eat this? Should I just bite into it?".
Signed with Teraoka's red seals within the plate/image.
The piece is nicely framed and ready to display.
Masami Teraoka has had over 70 solo exhibitions and he has twice been honored by the American Academy of Arts and Letters in New York. He has also received two fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts. His works can be found in collections and museums around the world including:

Masami Teraoka
Masami Teraoka brings a contemporary twist to traditional Japanese ukiyo-e woodblock prints, infusing them with ribald imagery and a pop art sensibility. He developed this signature graphic style after moving to the United States in 1961, where he received his BFA and MFA from Otis College of Art and Design. His highly regarded series “McDonald’s Hamburgers Invading Japan” and “31 Flavors Invading Japan” playfully fuse cross-cultural iconography to critique the widespread influence of American consumerism. Teraoka’s work has become more radical since the 1980s, when he began addressing issues like the AIDS epidemic, clergy sex abuse scandals, and nuclear proliferation. He has also drawn inspiration from religious Renaissance and Medieval art, painting grand triptychs that harken back to the stylized, flattened perspective of Edo-era prints.

Masami Teraoka Signed Limited Print New Views of Mt. Fuji, Sinking Pleasure Boat
By Masami Teraoka
Located in Studio City, CA
A very large and wonderfully detailed screen print by Asian/ Japanese American artist Masami Teraoka titled "New Views of Mt. Fuji: Sinking Pleasure Boat" is based on his original 1976-77 painting by the same name.
The print is numbered in pencil at the lower edge (63/75), blind-stamped and dated (1977) at the upper right, sealed by Teraoka with his personal stamps/seals within the image, and likely hand-signed on verso (we have not removed the artwork from the frame but this is most likely the case). The work was printed on Rives BFK paper by Ron McPherson and Julie McPherson, and published by Space Gallery, Los Angeles, CA.

Kaoru Kawano Signed Large Japanese Woodblock Print Dancing Geisha Figure Eshima
By Kaoru Kawano
Located in Studio City, CA
A beautiful work by famed Japanese artist Kaoru Kawano who was known for his whimsical portrayals of women, children, and animals. Stylistically, he was one of the first Japanese artists to combine Western-style elements with the traditional methods of woodblock printmaking. This work is known as "Dancing Figure (Eshima)"
The print is signed (in white ink within the image) and sealed (in red) by Kawano.
This work is a quite rare self-printed lifetime double dai Oban large-size print. The quality and colors are striking. It is likely from a limited edition and perhaps numbered on the lower margin (we can not verify as it was previously framed but we are confident that this is the case).
A very beautiful and rich image. Would make for a great addition to any Japanese art and print collection or Stand-out accent work in about any setting.
