About the Item

Created in 1937, this suite of bangle bracelet and clip brooch is formed of 18K gold, platinum and diamonds. The hinged, tapering bangle bracelet is alternating with platinum, highlighted by pave-set diamonds, clip brooch en suite. With its overt references to 1930s sculpture and architecture, this Tiffany suite represents the period reverence for streamlined forms, the new skyscrapers, and the speed and simplicity of modern life. Sold exclusively as a matching set. Item #: STE-21490 Artist: Tiffany & Co Country: United States of America Circa: 1937 Materials: Clip: 40 round diamonds (approximate total weight 1.60 carats); Brooch: 84 round diamonds (approximate total weight 3.25 carats); 18K Gold; Platinum Signed: Clip: TIFFANY & CO 18K, IRIDIO PLAT., BA: I.O. KEUFFEL Documentation: Bracelet accompanied by a certificate of expertise no. XP1674-160524 from IAJA provided by former director of the Tiffany & Co. archives, Annamarie Sandecki, stating that the bracelet is a "genuine Tiffany item". The certificate states that this bracelet or one like it was modeled in the July 1936 issues of Harper's Bazaar. It is noted that the bracelet was modified to add a central clasp at the top. Literature: The bracelet is featured on the cover of American Luxury: Jewels by the House of Tiffany, Jeannine Falino and Yvonne Markowitz, eds., and p. 145, plate 93. See also Tiffany's 20th Century, by John Loring, p. 88 for an image of the bracelet and the Harper's Bazaar couture shot by Hoyningen-Huene. Macklowe Gallery Curator's Notes: Under Louis Tiffany, who had made a worldwide name for the firm during the Art Nouveau period, Tiffany & Co. was slow to embrace the changes in design and aesthetic of the Art Deco era. After Louis' death in 1933, the firm had just begun to explore Art Moderne and Retro styles, culminating in their display of bold and distinctive jewelry at the World's Fair in 1939, when World War II began. During the war, Tiffany manufactured precision parts for anti-aircraft guns and planes. Tiffany & Co. jewelry from the 1930s is rare and hard to find.
