About the Item

Arthur King designed and handmade this diamond and pearl convertible ring in his signature organic style, circa 1970. King is a significant figure in mid-20th-century modernist jewelry design. The ring, designed to resemble natural flora, has an intricate gold setting that mimics gnarled branches, embracing a luminous 12mm golden South Sea pearl at its center. Nestled within the sculptural branches are 4.15 carats of diamonds in various shapes, ranging from colorless to warm hues of brownish-orange and yellow (G-H-I, VS clarity), along with additional pearls that enhance the ring’s rich, textural design. What makes this piece remarkable is its convertible feature—the South Sea pearl can be removed from the elaborate diamond setting and worn separately on a sleek gold band, offering a more understated yet equally elegant look. This innovative dual-wear design seamlessly transitions from statement glamour to refined simplicity. The ring is a size 4 ¾, signed “King”, and weighs 42 grams. In pristine condition, this exceptional piece is a testament to Arthur King’s bold, nature-inspired aesthetic, making it both a collectible work of art and a striking addition to any fine jewelry collection. Arthur Henry King (1921–1986) was a self-taught American jeweler renowned for his innovative and organic designs that challenged traditional jewelry aesthetics. Born in New Jersey, King’s journey into jewelry-making began during his service in the U.S. Merchant Marines in World War II, where he taught himself the lost art of wax casting, initially working with scrap metals and sharks’ teeth. After the war, King opened his first shop in the 1950s on 4th Street in New York’s Greenwich Village, a hub for avant-garde artists. His unique pieces, characterized by freeform designs and the use of baroque pearls, geodes, and raw semi-precious gemstones, quickly gained popularity. By the 1960s, he had expanded internationally, with boutiques in Florida, Cuba, Paris, and London, including a flagship store at 611 Madison Avenue in New York. His clientele included notable figures such as Lena Horne, who helped finance his midtown store, and his designs were showcased in prestigious institutions like the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.
