He established a brand, in Brassus, in the Vallée de Joux, in 1878, then for ten years continued to train, travel and import watches. He worked in the USA for Waltham Watch Co. He returned to Switzerland in 1888 and founded the C H Melan factory, going on to establish a branch in the United States in 1928. He contunued to collaborate with the Waltham watch Co. and held three US patents., made a name for himself by being one of the first European watchmakers to bring "complications" to to a watch in America. Selling under their own name and making for Cartier, Tiffany & Co. and Van Cleef and Arpels. Meylan movements could be found in the watches of more than 110 different jewellers His son, Max, one of seven children, took over running of the company in 1916. The company made chronographs in the 1930s but due to family conflicts the business fell apart. They continued to do business in the USA, run by A R and J E Meylan, founded in 1937. Baume and Mercier took a stake in the business but C H Meylan of Brassus closed in the 1960s.
