Poul Henningsen developed the PH 5 in 1958 in response to constant changes made to the shape and Size of incandescent bulbs by bulb manufacturers, naming it after the Size of the pendant’s main shade, which is 50 cm in diameter. When the lamp was introduced, he wrote, typically daringly, about how he had lost faith that the manufacturers of incandescent light bulbs would ever learn to consider common sense or have the consumer’s best interest at heart: “I have accepted fate, and with Louis Poulsen´s permission I have designed a PH fixture, which can be used with any kind of light source, Christmas lights and 100 W metal filament bulbs. This striking four arm chandelier was designed by Harald Notini and produced by Arvid Böhlmarks Lampfabrik in Sweden, circa 1927. This particular model numbered 6316 is a great example of the unique Swedish Grace style of this period.
The striking design consists of four marbled glass shades with a slightly undulating, scalloped rim. The shades are attached to brass holders with a serrated shape, connected to the centre by brass arms in a beautiful curved shape. The sphere shaped centre of the fixture with serrated decorative details throughout, with a separate hanging sphere attached to the lowest part of the lamp. This hanging sphere can be easily removed if desired.
The fixture is entirely executed in nickel plated brass which has developed a beautiful and natural patina over time.

This early Arts & Crafts era pendant has an aesthetic beauty that you don't find anymore in this day and age. It has the most pleasing to the eye shape and amber color and the handcrafted brass has a marvelous patina. In images 2 and 3 you can see that this unique light fixture started its life as (and still is) a candle lantern. Because of the Gothic quatrefoil details this may have been a sanctuary lamp at the entrance of a church or monastery.
