This framed engraving entitled "Birds-eye View of the Southern End of New York and Brooklyn, Showing the Projected Suspension-Bridge Over the East River, From the Western Terminus in Printing-House Square, New York" by Theodore R. Davis (1840–1894) was published as a supplement of Harper's Weekly, November 19, 1870.
The print is presented in a maple frame and a double mat. The frame measures 23.5" high, 29" wide and 0.75" deep. There is a vertical center fold and additional vertical lines, where wood engraving blocks were joined for the printing process. It is in excellent condition.
This framed image depicting New York in 1870 was a centerfold for the November 19, 1870 issue of Harper's Weekly. It includes the site and eventual appearance of the East River New York-Brooklyn Bridge; the name later shortened to the Brooklyn Bridge. The print was issued eleven months after the start of construction of the bridge on January 2, 1870, which would take another 12.5 years to complete. When this view was drawn, work on the bridge was all below ground, constructing the supports for the bridge’s towers. The A. Paul Weber Museum was inaugurated in Ratzeburg in 1973. Andreas Paul Weber died on 9 November 1980. This important German lithographer, draughtsman and painter bequeathed a comprehensive œuvre, in which critical satirical works figure prominently.

Andreas Paul Weber attended secondary modern school in Arnstadt between 1903 and 1910 before briefly attending the School for the Decorative and Applied Arts in Erfurt. In 1908 Weber joined the 'Jungwandervogel', a movement which sought to develop a new, modern lifestyle based on walking and living close to nature. At the same time Andreas Paul Weber began experimenting with lithography and worked as a commercial artist. When the first world war broke out, Weber served as a railway engineer on the Eastern Front, where he worked for the army as a draughtsman from 1916. After the war Andreas Paul Weber illustrated numerous books, including Till Eulenspiegel, Reineke Fuchs and the critical contemporary work Der Zeitgenosse by Hjalmar Kutzleb, which were Weber's first successes. In 1925 Weber founded the 'Clan-Presse' ['Clan Press'], where he and his son Christian printed...

About the artist:
Nancy Genn is an American artist living and working in Berkeley, California known for works in a variety of media, including paintings, bronze sculpture, printmaking, and handmade paper rooted in the Japanese washi paper making tradition Her work explores geometric abstraction, non-objective form, and calligraphic mark making, and features light, landscape, water, and architecture motifs. She is influenced by her extensive travels, and Asian craft, aesthetics and spiritual traditions.
Genn's first noted solo exhibition was in 1955 at Gump's Gallery in San Francisco. She received international recognition through her inclusion in French art critic Michel Tapié’s seminal text Morphologie Autre (1960), which cited her as one of the most important exponents of post-war informal art. Her abstract expressionist paintings of this period, continuing through the mid-1970s, featured all-over compositions of colorful layers of gestural brushwork and calligraphic mark making resembling asemic writing.
In 1961, Genn began creating bronze sculptures using the lost-wax casting method. Influenced by noted sculptor and family friend Claire Falkenstein, who used open-formed structures in her work, Genn cast forms woven from long grape vine cuttings, and produced vessels, fountains, fire screens, a menorah, a lectern, and, notably, the Cowell Fountain (1966) at UC Santa Cruz. In 1963 her sculptural work was exhibited with Berkeley artists Peter Voulkos and Harold Paris in the influential exhibition Creative Casting curated by Paul J. Smith at the Museum of Contemporary Crafts, New York.
Genn was one of the first American artists to express herself through handmade paper, first receiving wide recognition via exhibitions at Susan Caldwell Gallery, New York, beginning in 1977, and in traveling exhibitions with Robert Rauschenberg and Sam Francis. In 1978-1979, supported by the National Endowment for the Arts and Japan Creative Arts Fellowship, she studied papermaking in Japan, visiting local paper craftspeople, working in Shikenjo studio in Saitama Prefecture,[5] and exhibiting her work in Tokyo. This is a hand-colored folio sized lithograph entitled "Phaethornis Augusti", Salle's Hermit Hummingbird by John Gould, published in his "A Monograph of the Trochilidae, or Family of Humming-birds", published in London in 1850. The print, which was drawn by Gould and Henry Richter and lithographed by Hullmandel and Walton, depicts three brown, grey, black, white and some green colored hummingbirds about a plant with green leaves and coral and yellow flowers.
This beautiful Gould hand-colored hummingbird lithograph is in excellent condition. The original text page is included.
