Four Framed Hogarth Engravings "Four Times of the Day"
By William Hogarth
Located in Alamo, CA
The four plates in this "Four Times of the Day" set were created utilizing both engraving and etching techniques by William Hogarth in 1738. Hogarth's original copper plates were refurbished where needed by James Heath and these engravings were republished in London in 1822 by Braddock, Cradock & Joy. This was the last time Hogarth's original copper plates were used for printing. Most were melted down during World War I for the construction of bombs. Printed upon early nineteenth century wove paper and with large, full margins as published by William Heath in 1822. The inscription below each print reads "Invented Painted & Engraved by Wm. Hogarth & Publish'd March 25. 1738 according to Act of Parliament". These large folio sized "Four Times of the Day" engravings/etchings are presented in complex gold-colored wood frames with black bands and scalloped gold inner trim. A majority of each thick impressive frame is covered with glass applied near the outer edge. Each frame measures 25.75" high, 22.25" wide and 1.88" deep. There are a few small dents in the edge of these frames, which are otherwise in very good condition. "Morning" has two focal areas of discoloration in the upper margin and some discoloration in the right margin, a short tear in the left margin and a short tear or crease in the right margin. "Noon" has a spot in the upper margin that extends into the upper image, but it is otherwise in very good condition. "Evening" has a faint spot in the upper margin, but it is otherwise in very good condition. "Night" is in excellent condition. The "Four Times of the Day" series is in the collection of many major museums, including: The British Museum, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Tate Museum, The Chicago Art Institute and The Victoria and Albert Museum. Through this series Hogarth is portraying early 18th century London street life at "Four Times of the Day". His characters are exhibiting their personalities, quircks, strange activities, but he also wants to draw attention the disparities between the wealthy aristocracy and the common working class. Plate 1, "Morning" depicts morning in Covent Garden in the winter in front of Tom King...

"Lendas Africanas Da Bahia" from the suite.
Located in San Francisco, CA
This artwork titled " Lendas Africanas Da Bahia" from the suite, 1978, is an original colors woodcut by renown Brazilian/Argentinian artist Hector Julio Paride Barnabo Carybe, 1911-1997. It is hand signed and numbered 83/200 in pencil by the artist. The Wood block mark (image) is 23.65 x 15.75 inches, sheet size is 26.75 x 19 inches. About the artist: Héctor Julio Páride Bernabó (7 February 1911 – 2 October 1997) was an Argentine-Brazilian artist, researcher, writer, historian and journalist. His nickname and artistic name, Carybé, a type of piranha, comes from his time in the scouts. He died of heart failure after the meeting of a candomblé community's lay board of directors, the Cruz Santa Opô Afonjá Society, of which he was a member. Quick Facts Born, Died ... Carybé Born Héctor Julio Páride Bernabó 7 February 1911 Lanús, Argentina Died 2 October 1997 (aged 86) Salvador, Bahia, Brazil Nationality Brazilian Known for Painter, engraver, draughtsman, illustrator, potter, sculptor, mural painter, researcher, historian and journalist Close He produced thousands of works, including paintings, drawings, sculptures and sketches. He was an Obá de Xangô, an honorary position at Ilê Axé Opô Afonjá. Orixá Panels in the Afro-Brazilian Museum in Salvador Some of Carybé's work can be found in the Afro-Brazilian Museum in Salvador: 27 cedar panels representing different orixás or divinities of the Afro-Brazilian religion candomblé. Each panel shows a divinity with their associated implements and animal. The work was commissioned by the former Banco da Bahia S.A., now Banco BBM S.A., which originally installed them in its branch on Avenida Sete de Setembro in 1968. Murals at Miami International Airport American Airlines, Odebrecht and the Miami-Dade Aviation Department partnered to install two of Carybé's murals at Miami International Airport. They have been displayed in the American Airlines terminal at John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York since 1960. The 16.5 x 53-foot murals were accredited when Carybé won the first and the second prize in a contest of public art pieces for JFK airport. As its terminal at that airport was due for demolition, American Airlines donated the murals to Miami-Dade County, and Odebrecht invested in a project to remove, restore, transport and install the murals at Miami International Airport. The mural "Rejoicing and Festival of the Americas" portrays colorful scenes from popular festivals throughout the Americas, and "Discovery and Settlement of the West" depicts the pioneers’ journey into the American West. Carybé's Woodcuts in Gabriel García Márquez's Books Carybé illustrated four books by the Colombian writer Gabriel García Márquez, including One Hundred Years of Solitude, The Autumn of the Patriarch, Chronicle of a Death Foretold, and Love in the Time of Cholera "Carybé: um mestre da cultura baiana". ArqBahia Arquitetura, design, arte e lifestyle (in Brazilian Portuguese). 26 April 2023.. In particular, the woodcuts in One Hundred Years of Solitude are well-known for providing a visual image of the fictional town of Macondo, where the story takes place. The illustrations depict the colorful and winding houses, the railway bridge, and the hot and humid climate of the region, contributing to the reader's immersion in the story. Carybé's woodcuts are, therefore, an important part of Gabriel García Márquez's literary legacy, bringing a visual dimension to his stories that further enriches the reader's experience. Citamerdu (Amrita) Plant: 17th Century Botanical Engraving by Hendrik van Rheede
Located in Alamo, CA
This is a rare 17th century engraving of a plant entitled "Citamerdu" by the Dutch botanist Hendrik van Rheede tot Drakenstein, plate 21 from his 'Hortus Indicus Malabaricus' (Garden of Malabar), published in Amsterdam in 1686 by Johann van Someren. The engraving depicts the Citamerdu plant, also known as Tinospora cordifolia plant or Amrita and Guduchi. It is a deciduous plant with heart-shaped leaves, greenish flowers, and pea-shaped fruits. Rheede's 19th century publication featured illustrations of exotic plants and fruits labelled with script in the upper right corner in Latin, Malay, Arabic, and Sanskrit. Hortus Indicus Malabaricus is believed to be the earliest comprehensive published work on the flora of Asia and the tropics. The 17th century treatise featured important illustrations of 740 plants of the region, including Indian medicinal plants. The engraving is printed on 17th century laid, chain-linked paper, watermarked with an elaborate crown design. The sheet measures 15.75" high by 18.75" wide. There is a central fold, as issued. There are a few small spots, but the print is otherwise in excellent condition. There are additional Rheede botanical engravings from his 'Hortus Indicus Malabaricus' publication that are listed on my 1stdibs storefront and online website. These would make for an impressive display grouping. A discount is available for purchase of two or more of the prints. Hendrik Adriaan van...

By Mark Catesby
Located in Alamo, CA
A hand-colored copperplate engraving of a bird and plants by Mark Catesby (1683-1749) entitled "The Crested Titmous" from "The Natural History of Carolina, Georgia, Florida and the Bahama Islands", published in 1731. It depicts a small Crested Titmous bird, facing left, perched on the stem of a plant with clusters of mauve colored star-like flowers. The mat measures 20" x 15.5" and the sheet measures 18.75" x 14.75". Mark Catesby was born in England to a prosperous family, but he traveled to America, first to visit his sister and her husband in 1712. From 1712 to 1719 he explored America observing its birds and plants, taking notes, creating drawings and collecting specimens. He returned to England with this material and created more detailed drawings. His next visit to America 1722-1726 allowed for more detailed research. Upon his return to England he created his monumental and beautiful work "The Natural History of Carolina, Florida, and Bahama Islands", which was published in London in two folio volumes of 11 parts each consisting of 20 plates...
