Bat Series II 6/8
By Copper Tritscheller
Located in Napa, CA
A self-taught sculptor, Copper is drawn to what she considers the “misunderstood” animal, and much of her work centers on bats and burros. Pushing the barrier between animal and human, she approaches her subjects from all angles, playing on them as animals, and morphing them with human figures.
Copper was first inspired to sculpt bats when she was visiting a temple in Chachongsao, Thailand, where she encountered hundreds of thousands of bats hanging above her, wings gently quivering. Copper remembers that she had never thought about bats before, but at that moment she was captivated and started to research them. The more she learned, the deeper her respect for these marvelous creatures, and the more she wanted to find a way to help people understand and appreciate them. In her bat sculptures...

Music (attributed)
By Philip Kran Paval
Located in Los Angeles, CA
This sculpture is part of our exhibition America Coast to Coast: Artists of the 1930s
Music (attributed), brass and wire construction, c. 1936, 28 x 14 x 5 inches; perhaps exhibited at Hollywood Riviera Gallery, 1936 (third prize); provenance includes Estate of Jon Spencer Helfen (Los Angeles, CA
About the Sculpture
In 1935, Philip Paval bought a box of metal in a “blind auction.” Paval, a painter, sculptor, and jeweler, had hoped the box contained silver. To his dismay, it was brass. Seeing an opportunity, Paval started to make sculptures from the brass sheets. His subjects included Cinema, Hollywood, Radio, Dance, Aviation and Music. The works were well-received with the Hollywood crowd and critically acclaimed. Actor and comedian, Ben Bard, purchased four of them for his theater, and novelist and screenwriter, Vicki Baum ordered four more for her drawing room. Movie director King Vidor also purchased them. Los Angeles Times art critic, Arthur Millier, described Paval’s “contraptions” as “ingenious, decorative, different.” Paval exhibited these works for several years in the late 1930s, including at the American Artists’ Congress Gallery in Los Angeles in an exhibition called Formalism and Abstraction in 1938 and at a solo show at Stendahl Galleries in 1939. The appeal of these works must have been irresistible, as a 1936 Los Angeles Times article noted, “Two feet of brass art has been stolen from the Hollywood Riviera Galleries. The work is an abstraction. It portrays the spirit of music and rested on the grand piano in the main hall. The work of Philip Paval, it won third prize in the current gallery exhibition at the gallery.” One can only wonder whether this is the “contraption” which was pilfered from the gallery nearly one hundred years ago. Given the description of the work, its subject matter and size, it seems likely.
About the Artist
Philip Paval was a sculptor, painter, and jeweler. Born in Denmark, Paval was apprenticed to a silversmith and studied art in Denmark. He immigrated to the US in 1919 and first worked as a merchant seaman in New York. The following year, Paval settled in Los Angeles where he later opened his own jewelry shop featuring works he designed and produced. Paval became a favorite in the entertainment world, making a good living selling silver...

The Guardian
By Maxine Kim Stussy 1
Located in West Hollywood, CA
Maxine Kim Stussy was a prolific sculptor and painter from the late 1940’s to present. Maxine led an incredibly artistic life traveling the world with her husband at the time, artist Jan Stussy, who headed the art department at UCLA for several decades. Both artists were close associates of Stanton MacDonald Wright, known as one of the greatest American modernist artists, also known as the co creator of the synchronistic movement in the teens with Marcel Duchamp.
Maxine was unrestricted by any singular medium; her sculptures took form in wood assemblage, concrete, bronze and unique nail assemblage. Large size seemed natural to her, and she often created figurative sculpture over 7 feet high. The gallery has represented the original sculpture of Maxine Kim Stussy for many years, and this is the first time we have presented any of her original works on 1st Dibs.

Grafted to the Winds of Spring 4 - Bronze Abstract Figurative Wall Sculpture
By Jennyfer Stratman
Located in Los Angeles, CA
There is a metaphorical interplay between the natural imagery international artist, Jennyfer Stratman, uses and its multiple meanings. While the human figure features strongly, it is the essence of the body that is important to her, not the representation. Particularly, the artist imagines trees and branches as a figurative link between the natural environment and our physical presence. The implied internal landscape of the body can also be reflected in how our surroundings from birth affect our sense of identity. By exploring landscapes of the body and mind, she also hopes to comment on the larger picture of our impact on the natural world.
This unique bronze and painted steel sculpture measures 12 inches square and 1.5 inches deep. It is signed by Stratman on the back. Free local Los Angeles delivery. Affordable Continental U.S. and International shipping available. A certificate of authenticity issued by the art gallery is included.
Stratman grew up in Phoenix, Arizona. In 1992 she commenced her studies at Arizona State University majoring in visual arts and art education. Stratman entered academia as a ceramicist. With each passing semester, the scale of her creations expanded and the material limitations of working with clay ultimately led her to the university foundry. This opened a door into another world of creative possibilities, profoundly changing her artistic direction. She replaced fired clay with larger-scale bronze, steel, and mixed media sculptures yet retained a delicacy, intimacy, and intricacy imbued from the ceramic process.
Today she is a full-time established artist with studios operating in Phoenix, Arizona and Melbourne, Australia. Her time is divided between the two countries with each location informing and influencing the creative process. She has exhibited in 31 solo exhibitions and over 100 group exhibitions nationally and internationally. Her indoor and outdoor sculptures are held in public and private collections in countries including the United States, Australia, Canada, Hong Kong, Singapore, Taiwan, Israel, England, and Europe.
Artplex Gallery has been representing and exhibiting Jennyfer Stratman's original artworks in Los Angeles since 2021, presenting her impressive works to an international collector base around the globe. The gallery has been a 1stdibs partner since 2014 with consistently excellent reviews from clients worldwide. The gallery exhibits a well-curated selection of original artworks beyond the ordinary from established and emerging international artists with diverse backgrounds at high standards. Randolph John Rogers (American, 1825 - 1892) Randolph Rogers' Nydia, the Blind Flower Girl of Pompeii debuted in 1856 to critical and public acclaim, solidifying Rogers’ position as a pre-eminent American sculptor and it remains one of the artist’s most celebrated works today. The subject of Nydia is drawn from Edward Bulwer-Lytton's The Last Days of Pompeii 1834. After touring the ruins of the ancient city in 1833, and inspired by the stories of blinding volcanic ash, he composed the tale of Nydia, a slave who led her master, Glaucus, to safety. Rogers depicts Nydia at the moment that she and Glaucus have become separated in their perilous journey through the rubble and Nydia seeks familiarity in the surrounding chaos, her distress evident in her pained expression. The grace of the sculpture is at odds with the turmoil portrayed; a toppled Corinthian capital lies at her feet and obstructs her next step, indicated by the tilt of her back foot and grip on her walking stick. Examples of this model can be found in major American collections, including The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Detroit Institute of Arts, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.
Literature, Millard F Rogers, Jr. Randolph Rogers, American Sculptor in Rome. University of Massachusetts Press, 1971, American Figurative Sculpture in the Museum of Fine Arts Boston. Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, 1986. Joyce K Schiller. "Nydia, A Forgotten Icon of the Nineteenth Century." Bulletin of the Detroit Institute of Arts,
Born in Waterloo, New York, Randolph John Rogers became an expatriate* sculptor of idealized figures, portraits, and commemorative works in Neo-Classical* and Realist* styles. He worked in clay, plaster, marble and bronze, and lived both in Italy and the United States. He made 167 examples of Nydia in two sizes (varies depending on base height) 36" and 54'.
Rogers was raised in Ann Arbor, Michigan, and as a young man did woodcuts* for the local newspaper, The Michigan Argus, and also worked as a baker's assistant and a dry goods clerk. In 1847, he moved to New York City, where he hoped to find work as an engraver*, but failing to do so, worked in a dry goods store owned by John Steward...

Lula - Incredible Gazelle Wall Sculpture from Up-Cycled Materials (Blue + White)
By Yulia Shtern
Located in Gilroy, CA
"Lulu" is a beautiful contemporary sculpture created by the Canadian artist Yulia Shtern. Her work depicts beautifully decaying remnants of species on our planet that are currently endangered. Shtern utilizes common household materials such as produce netting and colored cardboards in her up-cycled process to authenticate her message. An unfortunate truth of our current society that is often forgotten. Shtern creates these beautiful pieces to draw the viewer in and force them to engage with reality head-on. This work is eye-catching with a delicate texture and vibrant colors and would brighten up any room.
Artist's Inspiration: "Saudi Gazelle was native to the northern and western parts of the Arabian peninsula, preferring rocky habitats with shrubs and acacia trees. It lived alongside Mountain Gazelle and Arabian Sand Gazelle. The populations of these other two gazelle species of the Arabian peninsula have been severely diminished over the last few decades, and they both are classified as vulnerable. Gazelles were some of the most frequently depicted animals in the Neolithic art...

Growing in a Fragmented Landscape - Abstract Figurative Wall Sculpture
This unique sculpture is made from bronze, brass, copper, and steel. It measures 38 inches high by 45 inches wide and 2 inches deep. It is signed by Stratman on the front and back.
