Description
Masked suggests a sense of mystery and eccentricity, and begs the question: Who is the man behind the mask? The work was created free-form from a solid block of Italian marble with visible tool markings that show the artist’s skillful hand.

Bela Bacsi
Béla Bácsi was born in Gyor, Hungary in 1950. At the age of six, he moved with his family to the United States. Continuing in the family’s profession as stone carvers, presently in its fifth generation, Bácsi took an interest in carving at an early age. Today, Béla Bácsi is recognized as perhaps one of three fine art marble artists in the world.
Essentially self-taught, in 1978 Bácsi gained employment at the Studio Ferdinando Palla in Pietrasanta, Italy, where he became an “ornamentista” or fine detail carver. Returning to the U.S. and settling in Cleveland, Ohio, he then worked as an architectural ornamental master designer at Fischer and Jirouch Architectural Ornamentation and as a bronze foundryman at the nationally acclaimed Studio Foundry. Eventually, Bácsi opened his own sculpture studio and now lives and works in Santa Barbara, California.
In 1999 Bácsi was awarded both the Gold Medal and Maurice B. Hexter Prize at the National Sculpture Society Members’ Exhibition in New York City. Bácsi has twice received the coveted California Art Club Gold Medal for Best Sculpture, once at the 91st Annual Gold Medal Juried Exhibition in 2001, and again at the 96th Annual Gold Medal Juried Exhibition in 2007, both exhibitions were held at the Pasadena Museum of California Art.
Bácsi holds a California Community Colleges teaching certificate for adult education programs and has taught at Santa Barbara City College and currently teaches in the Fine Art Department at California Lutheran University. In addition, he serves as an adviser to the Santa Barbara Museum of Art Docents’ Council.
Béla Bácsi is a Professional Sculptor Member of the National Sculpture Society and a Signature Artist Member of the California Art Club.

- THE LAST DAYS OF NAPOLÉON BYLocated in New Orleans, LAThis highly evocative bronze by Vincenzo Vela captures the deposed Emperor Napoléon on his deathbed, holding a map of Europe and lost in thought about what might have been. Remarkable among most portrayals of the exiled leader, this highly detailed sculpture depicts Napoléon at his most vulnerable. Nonetheless, Vela perfectly captures his still-heroic bearing, which imparts to this work a monumental quality and quiet dignity. The mate to this figure is the colossal marble at the Musée du Château de Malmaison, which was shown at the Paris Salon of 1867. The founder of the verismo movement in Italy, Vela was one of the great exponents of realism in sculpture. Born in Ligornetto, Switzerland in 1820, he studied under celebrated sculptor, Benedetto Cacciatori. He was also influenced both by the work of Tuscan sculptor Lorenzo Bartolini, who seamlessly combined neoclassicism with naturalism and the romantic painting of Francesco Hayez...Category

- Salvatore Albano signed dated 19th century figurative italian marble sculptureLocated in Florence, ITThis marble bust, signed S. Albano dated 1890, belongs to his adult age and to the last years of his life, when he was already very requested and he had a prolific workshop in Florence. It represents a young peasant, portrayed with a simple handkerchief covering her hair and a shirt opened on the neckline to let us a see the crucifix cross, symbol of a sincere and innocent faith (the necklace appears in other is Albano’s works, like in the artist’s sister, Evangeline, Marguerite busts and in the Marguerite sculpture, all of them in private collections). The simple and tender subject is made with an exquisite technique, still quoting De Gubernatis “he can be enviable because he gives to the modelled flesh a singular transparency”, as we can see in the delicacy of the cheeks, nose, chin. His skills especially appear in the details: the locks naturally coming out, the light signs of the eyebrows, handkerchief with his thin folding line, the collar of the shirt bending on itself, the use of the drill for the rendering of the curly hair. Born in a small town in the deep South of Italy by a decent but very modest family, he developed artistic inclination since he was a child by modelling Nativity Scene characters for the people of his neighbour until the1858 when, thanks to the help of some oh his fellows recognising his talent, he moved to Naples to follow the lessons of the sculptor Antonio Sorbillo before starting his training at the Fine Art Academy with Tito Angelini...Category
