Terry O’Neill captured the essence of London’s Swinging Sixties with this dual portrait of model Jean Shrimpton and actor Terence Stamp. Shrimpton defined the look of the ‘posh’ girls of the day and Stamp was fresh from his award-winning performance in the British classic Billy Budd. Taken in London in 1963, the couple was regarded as the ‘faces of the 60s’ by Vogue magazine. Terry O'Neill came to prominence in the 1960s with the new generation of photographers including David Bailey and Brian Duffy who rejected the static formality of the posed photographs of the 1950s and went instead for spontaneity and unusual settings. Jean Rosemary Shrimpton is an English model and actress. She was an icon of Swinging London and is considered to be one of the world's first supermodels. French actress Brigitte Bardot in Deauville, 1968. It is the first time she meets British actor Sean Connery before the filming of 'Shalako', directed by Edward Dmytryk. In 1968, O’Neill got the call to travel down to Almeria, Spain to take photos during the filming of ‘Shalako’. He already knew and worked with one of the stars, Sean Connery, but this would be the first time he would meet Connery’s leading lady, Brigitte Bardot. Bardot burst onto the film screens with starring roles in ‘And God Created Woman,’ ‘A Very Private Affair’ and ‘The Truth’ – all box-office successes in Europe. ‘Shalako’ would be an attempt for Bardot to cross-over to America and become a Hollywood star. Unfortunately, ‘Shalako’ did not translate into the box-office numbers the studio was hoping for, however it’s remembered for having brought two of the sixties most iconic, charismatic sex symbols together on the big screen!

Terry O’Neill is one of the world’s most collected photographers with work hanging in national art galleries and private collections worldwide. From presidents to pop stars he has photographed the frontline of fame for over six decades.
O’Neill began his career at the birth of the 1960s. While other photographers concentrated on earthquakes, wars and politics, O’Neill realized that youth culture was a breaking news story on a global scale and began chronicling the emerging faces of film, fashion and music who would go on to define the Swinging Sixties. By 1965 he was being commissioned by the biggest magazines and newspapers in the world.

In my deliberations as to how to tell a Nantucket story, there were some key asso-ciations of the island that I knew I needed to incorporate. One was always going to be its storied maritime past, and in particular its leading position in the whaling industry. Then there are certain features on the island that if included in an image would reinforce a sense of place - such as Nantucket Grey buildings and of course the lighthouses.
But in our production meetings in the run up to the assignment, there was one feature I kept on requesting that we prioritised - the cobbled streets. When I think of Nantucket, I think of the cobbles - particularly on Main Street - not only because of their aesthetic appeal, but also because they tell a story of the island’s British roots. I have never used this old brewery building before in my storytelling because I worried that the facade was too high to fit in an image if there was also to be a cast immediately in front of it. There were two possible solutions - to move the story further away from the building, which would risk disassociation, or to get close to the building with a wide-angle lens, not easy at all and could risk ending with a lousy series of far lit loose shots. The whole building would be in for sure, but to work with a 28mm lens and a wolf is not to play the percentages.
We had no real choice but to go for the second option and roll the dice. We got lucky, but as someone once said “Luck is the residue of design”. A sharp shot on a 28 mm lens is pin pin sharp.

Over the last few weeks we have quietly been photographing senior Native Americans against the backdrop of quintessential and emblematic American vistas.
Whilst we will be releasing some of the series in the run up to the Presidential Election, this is not an overtly political statement from us. We know that Native Americans have long had a leaning toward the Democratic Party, but we took this assignment on because it is relevant, not to be political.
There is wide recognition now that Christopher Columbus did not discover America in 1492 and the events in Minneapolis have accelerated the debate on the possibility of institutionalised racism in the teaching of American history. This is not a discussion we want to fully engage in - as we are ill equipped to add value, but I do want to celebrate some of the tribal elders I have had the fortune to encounter in the last month. Their pride, manners, grace and humility have been humbling. We have made new friends in the North.
For this project we worked with Chief John Spotted Tail, the great-great-grandson of the fabled Lakota chief Spotted Tail. We spent two days with him in Northern Wyoming and he was so excited to wear the headpiece that only the most senior Native American chiefs like him can wear. His attire was emphatically his decision not ours. Their heritage is integral to their souls.

The intricate layout for this picture was preconceived before I went to bed the previous night. I took this photograph of the legendary West Texas cowboy - Ty Mitchell - on a sandbank on the Rio Grande. Ty stands 6ft 5” tall and my general assessment is that not much fazes this guy. Meanwhile, the location is about as good as it gets and is rather wonderfully named Contraband Creek.
I was standing in Mexico and 20 yards across the river was the US. Every time I walked knee deep across the river to change a lens or camera, I entered America and then on my return I re-entered Mexico. I think I actually entered America four times in a morning - all rather surreal with this talk of a wall.

I hope this image is identified as having some of my trademarks. Every inch of the frame sweats and every person within the frame firmly stakes claim to his or her presence. I was greedy in the amount of information I wanted in the picture and for it to come off, I needed luck as well as strong communication with everyone on set. It has the cinematic feel that I often strive for and I think in time I will look back very fondly on that evening. At the moment it is all a little fresh and the subject matter is sufficiently adrift from my normal work that it is difficult to find context. But my sense is that it is a special photograph.
The goal was to attain compositional harmony amidst the chaos of the beach landing, which was not that easy an objective as this landing was for real. This raw and rocky coastline in Anguilla is no studio. In retrospect it is remarkable that not only are the faces of the six male pirates in the landing party all in view but they also show collective endeavour. They had enough to think about dealing with the boat in the tide and maybe the truth is that they weren’t in role at all.
Whilst getting soaked, out of my right eye I was checking the barrel in the sea, as I didn’t want to lose it behind the boat. There was quite a bit of multi-tasking going on in that one minute. Keeping a watch on two Rastafarian friends on the rocks was a further dimension. It was quite late in the day and by that time, I couldn't be too sure of their footing given their activities during the day.

Larry, as he was known throughout the industry, was an award-winning photojournalist, who covered the political, social, and artistic events of his time for top publications such as Look, Life, The New York Times, Newsweek, The Saturday Evening Post, Vogue, Collier’s, and Parade Magazine. Fried became interested in photography while serving as a platoon sergeant with the First Infantry Division during World War II. He made a pinhole camera with a matchbox, and would shoot through the tank turret. Fried photographed the battle action and was surprised to learn they were sold to a wire service. His first published pictures were in Stars and Stripes. Influenced by wartime imagery, he returned to the States and went to the University of Miami on the GI Bill while working as a theatrical director and photographer.
He returned to his native New York City where he immersed himself in the theatrical world, shooting for PIX, Inc, the legendary photo-rep agency with friends such as George Karger...
