Modernist Judaica Sculpture
Born Charna Barsky (Charna Ysabel or Isabel Rickey Barsky) in Chihuahua, Mexico, the future artist lived in Hermosillo and immigrated to Los Angeles when she was 11. She was educated at UCLA and Cal State L.A., she married furniture retailer David Rickey and explored art while raising their three daughters. Moving through phases in terra cotta, bronze, marble and aluminum, she found success later in life. Rickey became one of the original art teachers at Everywoman's Village, a pioneering learning center for women established by three housewives in Van Nuys in 1963. She also taught sculpture at the University of Judaism from 1965 to 1981.
As Rickey became more successful, her sculptures were exhibited in such venues as Artspace Gallery in Woodland Hills and the Courtyard of Century Plaza Towers as part of a 1989 Sculpture Walk produced by the Los Angeles Arts Council. Her sculptures have also found their way into the private collections of such celebrities as Sharon Stone.
Another of Rickey's international creations originally stood at Santa Monica College. In 1985, her 12-foot-high musical sculpture shaped like the Hebrew letter "shin" was moved to the Rubin Academy of Music and Dance at Hebrew University in Jerusalem. The free standing architectural Judaic aluminum work has strings that vibrate in the wind to produce sounds. Rickey also created art pieces for the city of Brea. Agnes Yarnall LePage, began studying sculpture at the age of 6 at the Liberty Tadd School of Modeling. She went on to study with Charles Grafly at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts before opening her own studio in the late 1920s, with the support of her parents, Anna B. Coxe and Charlton Yarnall.
Over the years, Ms. Yarnall's work included numerous portraits, human figures and animal sculptures. Among her proudest achievements were busts of George Washington and General Lafayette, displayed at the Valley Forge Historical Society, and of Abraham Lincoln, at the Union League of Philadelphia. She also counted among her premier accomplishments busts she sculpted of Ronald Reagan, Jack Nicklaus and Pope John Paul II. One reviewer who had seen her depictions of Edna St. Vincent Millay, Dame Judith Anderson, Carl Sandburg and Sir John Gielgud lauded her work for its ''sensitivity, grace and dynamism," her family said. During her early career Ms. Yarnall studied and worked with such great artists as Boris Blai, Paul Manship and Alexander Archipenko.
In addition to her long career in sculpture, she also was an accomplished poet. Her books included Indian Summer, Hesperides and Other Poems and Pandora and Other Poems. Jo Yarrington’s photographs, prints, works on paper, glass sculptures and architecturally-based installations have been shown in exhibitions at the Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum, Yale University, Cornell University, the Museum of Glass, the DeCordova Museum and Sculpture Park, Artists Space, St. John the Divine Cathedral, Grounds for Sculpture, the Museum of American Glass and ODETTA, among others.
International exhibitions have included Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts Museum, Glasgow School of Art, Glasgow Cathedral, Glasgow University, Galeria Sala Uno and Centro de las Artes de Guanajuato. She represented the United States at the Sharjah Biennial, United Arab Emirates and participated in the Berlin Biennial. in 2010 she received the Bronze Prize, the Museum of Contemporary Art, Skopje, Macedonia.
Yarrington is a recipient of artist grants and Fellowships from the Pollock Krasner Foundation, the New York Foundation for the Arts, the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts and the Connecticut Commission on Culture and Tourism. She has received Residency Fellowships from the MacDowell Colony, the Museum of Glass, the Museum of American Glass, the Bridge Virtual Residency/ SciArt Center, the Lucile Walton Fellow/Mountain Lake Biological Station, the Virginia Center for Creative Arts, the Anderson Center and the Ucross Foundation, among others.
International grants and fellowships have included the Banff Center for Arts and Creativity/Canada, SIMS Residency/ Iceland, Cill Rialaig Artists Residency/Ireland, the Burren College of Art Residency/Ireland and the American Scandinavian Foundation. She is a Professor of Visual and Performing Arts at Fairfield University and lives and works in New York City.
STATEMENT
In site-specific exhibitions, public art commissions, collaborative and individual projects Jo Yarrington has used varied combinations of glass, waxed surfaces, found artifacts and experimental analog photography to investigate the way we perceive – searching for, experimenting with and developing throughout a sensory-based vernacular. Her mostly translucent materials function as physical framework and symbolic membrane. Light, both natural and ambient, provides a kinetic or time-based element to her work. Scale and the integration of architecture are also pivotal components.
In the 6-part installation for the two-person exhibition Illuminated, Yarrington continues her interest in the connections between vision, sound and language. In Mute-ability: Compositions 1 – 6, her title for this light-based comprehensive work, she combines the words mute and malleability. I first realized my love for visual storytelling when I began producing and directing television shows. Starting with the writer’s script, my palette was everything seen through the camera’s lens: actors, movement, light, and mood. Shot by shot, I wove together these images into two-dimensional dramas.
I longed, however, to tell my own stories, to move beyond words and pictures, and to explore themes that ignited my imagination. My sculptures and assemblages became the three-dimensional stories I wanted to tell; stories about relationships, childhood, time passage, marriage, motherhood, and secrets never told.
My sculpting process always begins with a tiny bit of clay to which I add more, never knowing how any piece will end. I don’t use models...

Using bone as the central image Elsbeth has assembled an optical and visual experience. One view is the magnification and juxtaposition of the floating effect of the curvature in the stainless steel background; stand back and it's a hologram effect. The first image shows clearly the hologram effect available to the eye of the viewer.

What we know, or think, to be true in the hard brightness of daytime reality dissolves into an amorphous space of multiple possibilities and perspectives."
Born in Purdys, New York, Elspeth Halvorsen is the daughter, granddaughter, and mother of professional artists. She has studied at prestigious academic and artistic institutions includingthe New School for Social Research, the Art Students League, and the Académie de la Grande Chaumière. In 1955, she moved to Provincetown, Massachusetts, establishing her home and studio in the former residence of Mark Rothko. Provincetown not only remains her home but also acts as a personal, social, and artistic source of inspiration for her work.
