Reclining Figure Carved Marble Early 20th Century France
Located in London, GB
Circle of Henri-Gaudier-Breska 1891-1915 Reclining Figure Carved marble Height 5 inches Born Henri Alphonse Séraphin Marie Gaudier near Orléans in France, Gaudier-Brzeska started using his hyphenated name in 1910 when he met the Polish writer Sophie Brzeska. They moved to London together in January 1911 and adopted their new names and the identity of brother and sister in order to make their cohabitation respectable. Gaudier-Brzeska started to establish himself as a sculptor in 1912. Initially influenced heavily by Rodin, he later assimilated more influences from the modernist movement of cubism and from examples of non-European art he saw in London’s museums. He met the sculptor Jacob Epstein in June 1912, who further encouraged him to break with classical Greek tradition. While working from 25 Winthorpe Road in 1913–14, Gaudier-Brzeska became increasingly involved in London’s avant-garde art scene. He exhibited at the London Salon in July 1913, where he met the poet and arts patron Ezra Pound. Pound described Brzeska as ‘like a well-made young wolf or some soft-moving, bright-eyed wild thing’. Gaudier-Brzeska subsequently became associated with the vorticist movement led by Wyndham Lewis, contributing two important articles to Lewis’s magazine Blast and signing his name against the vorticist manifesto. He was also a founding member of the London Group, which formed when the all-male Camden Arts Group joined with independent artists to challenge the dominance of the Royal Academy of Arts. Other founding members included Walter Sickert, Robert Bevan and Spencer Gore...

Oak and Marble 18th Century French Commode Jean Pierre Latz
Located in London, GB
Oak then lacquered with marble top Carved/Stamped with the name "Latz" in the wood under the marble Height: 55 inches (86.25 cm) Width: 55 inches (140 cm) Provenance Château de Mareil Le Guyon This commode is available to view at our gallery on Cecil Court. Jean-Pierre Latz Jean-Pierre Latz was one of the handful of truly outstanding cabinetmakers working in Paris in the mid 18th-century. Like several of his peers in the French capital, he was of German origin. His furniture is in a fully developed rococo style, employing boldly sculptural gilt-bronze mounts complementing marquetry motifs of flowers and leafy sprays, in figured tropical veneers like tulipwood, amarante, purpleheart and rosewood, often featuring the distinctive end-grain cuts. He also produced lacquered pieces, most famously the slant-front desk in the collection of Stavros Niarchos...

Albert Montserrat, Cadmium Jar, Porcelain; Textured Glazes on Thrown Porcelain
By Albert Montserrat
Located in London, GB
Porcelain; Textured Glazes on Thrown Porcelain 54 x 55 x 55 cm 21 1/4 x 21 5/8 x 21 5/8 in. ------- Montserrat is totally convinced that ceramics is the most noble, traditional and humanly attached material of all. Also, historically, what this material has allowed us, the humanity, to achieve, in all aspects, from improving our health to a medium of expression, is immense. This makes him feel real veneration and respect to it. He shows a very particular interest for the highly technically demanding oriental glazes from the Old Masters, having inspired him to make an extensive research, giving the strong finish to Montserrat’s work. Glazes are his passion. He is fascinated to see and endlessly test what the chemical elements around us bring to the surface of the vessels that he throws on the wheel. He has a special interest in the traditional vessels that the history of ceramics has brought to us. From the Egyptian canopic...

Night Rain - City Street by Night / Urban Scene in Sculptural Glass
By Jeff Cunningham
Located in London, GB
Sympathetically capturing the essence of the urban landscape in his work, Jeff says - ‘I studied HND Art & Design at the Glasgow College of Building & Printing before working as a set artist for “the Complex” theatre, Los Angeles. I then went on to study BSc “Special Effects” at Southbank University, London, which led to employment in the Art/Special Effects departments on major movie productions including the Oscar-winning “Last Samurai” and Steven Spielbergs’ Oscar-nominated “Munich”. After several years working as a fine artist in the industry, I realised a lifelong ambition, setting up my own glass studio to research and work with the diverse materials and challenging techniques involved in the creation of multi-layered glass sculpture.’
