English Tripod Table Regulator Clock by Thomas Cole, Retailed by Hunt & Roskell
By Thomas Cole (Clockmaker)
Located in Brighton, West Sussex
A Fine English Tripod Table Regulator Clock by Thomas Cole, With Integral Thermometer and Barometer, Retailed by Hunt & Roskell, London
Signed to the dial for the retailer ‘Hunt & Roskell, London.’
No. 1318 /38
The circular six-inch silvered dial with cast bezel, signed ‘Hunt & Roskell, London’, above Roman chapters and blued steel spade hands, set with a large subsidiary seconds dial below XII, the centre finely engraved with scrolling strapwork decoration. The steel winding square protruding through an engraved and shaped plate immediately below 6 o'clock with handset achieved by adjustment to the rear. The movement with tapered plates joined by cylindrical screwed pillars, a two-part backplate, a going barrel, and deadbeat escapement. The pendulum suspended from the apex of the tripod from a G-bracket, with plumb line above, fine regulation achieved by a sliding cylindrical weight on the rod, terminating in a heavy silvered spherical bob secured via Cole's pendulum-locking system.
The case formed of three cylindrical rods set on a gilt and stepped circular base engraved with scrolling foliage, the recessed centre with a semi-circular glazed barometer with silvered register scale, blued steel hand and manually adjustable gilt recording hand. The tilted thermometer within an engraved and gilded surround. Below the tip of the pendulum is a beat scale resting on a bimetallic bar providing thermal compensation, the base resting on three adjustable gilt-metal levelling nuts.
Retaining its original glass dome and brass winding key.
England, Circa 1855.
This fine and rare timepiece by Thomas Cole is a masterpiece of design.
Described by Hawkins in 'Thomas Cole & Victorian Clockmaking' as “the first English table regulator for a gentleman’s library table,” Cole’s strut clock underwent over eight iterations before achieving a design that combined precision with extraordinary elegance.
The use of a tripod to determine the optimal pendulum suspension point is just one of several ingenious mechanisms Cole employed. Three adjustable nuts serving as feet allow for effective levelling of the clock, while a plumb line and bob ensure precise vertical alignment. Relocating the winding square directly beneath the dial eliminates the risk of scratching the surface or damaging the hands, while the inclusion of a thermometer, angled at 45 degrees, effectively conceals the beat scale and pendulum locking mechanism.
Ingeniously designed, the locking mechanism positioned just below the pendulum’s tip includes a beat scale resting on a brass bar that can be raised to secure the pendulum in place. This mechanism also provides thermal compensation through a bi-metallic strip, which automatically raises or lowers the bob in response to temperature fluctuations.
Both inventive and aesthetically striking, this rare clock exemplifies the highly ornamental Victorian timepieces...

Vintage Synchronome Electric Copper Cased Railway Waiting Room Wall Clock

Vintage Reclaimed Industrial Copper Wall Clock by Synchronome
A stunning little industrial clock made in England circa 1930 by The Synchronome Company Ltd.
Synchronome were the preeminent clock maker throughout the early & mid 20th century, commercially producing the most accurate electric clocks globally despite strong competition from companies such as Gents of Leicester.
Stunning stepped copper case retaining its wonderful original aged patination.
The attractive aged hand painted dial bearing Roman Numeral indices and the Synchronome Electric makers marks.
The clock currently retains its original 30 second impulse movement which we can run via a impulse driver which would mimic the original master the clock would of ran from, alternatively we can convert the original hands to run from a modern high torque battery quartz movement.
The artists figure in the images is 6ft 1" to give a representation of scale.

Overall Width 295 mm (11.5 Inch)

The Synchronome Company
The Synchronome Company, established in 1895 by Frank Hope-Jones and George Bennett Bowell, became one of Britain’s most influential manufacturers of precision electric clocks. Specialising in master clock systems, Synchronome revolutionised timekeeping with their innovative mechanisms, which distributed accurate time signals across large networks. Their clocks found widespread use in observatories, railway stations, and public buildings, becoming synonymous with reliability and precision.
One of their crowning achievements was the development of the Shortt–Synchronome free pendulum clock, created in collaboration with horologist William Hamilton Shortt. Released in the 1920s, this was the most accurate pendulum clock of its time and was used as the primary time standard in many observatories worldwide, solidifying Synchronome’s reputation for technical excellence.
Rivalry with Gents of Leicester
Synchronome’s rise to prominence brought them into fierce competition with another titan of the industry—Gents of Leicester. Both companies vied for dominance in the electric clock market, offering master clock systems that set the standard for accuracy and reliability. While Gents focused on robust, functional designs that served a wide range of public and industrial applications, Synchronome honed its reputation in scientific and observatory-grade timekeeping.
The rivalry spurred innovation, with each company striving to outdo the other in design, precision, and reliability. Gents became renowned for its large-scale installations in landmarks like Waterloo Station and the Houses of Parliament, while Synchronome distinguished itself with pioneering technology, particularly in the field of astronomical timekeeping. This competitive dynamic not only elevated the standards of timekeeping in the early 20th century but also left a legacy of exceptional craftsmanship and innovation that collectors and enthusiasts value today.
Synchronome Clocks: A Timeless Legacy
Today, reclaimed Synchronome clocks are treasured for their industrial design and historical significance. Known for their sturdy construction and clean, minimalist style, these clocks are perfect for adding vintage charm to modern interiors. Whether it’s a classic Synchronome master clock...

Ormolu and Champleve Enamel Antique French Clock by Le Roy & Fils
By Le Roy, Vincenti et Cie
Located in Belper, Derbyshire
A magnificent Renaissance style clock by the renown Parisian clockmaking firm of Le Roy &Fils. Beautifully modelled in finely gilded bronze and finely decorated with exquisite polychrome champlevé enamel. The case is formed with an arched swan neck pediment surmounted by a turret with elaborate finial.
To the sides are charming figures of cherubs clutching the baluster turned pillars. A third cherub is seated above the dial. The dial is also gilded bronze with champlevé enamel and is complete with original finely blued steel hands. The clock is decorated in the round with a frosted glass rear door. Please note that this type of clock does not have a glazed bezel to cover the dial.
The French movement is of high quality and is by Vincenti et Cie. It is in excellent clean and running condition having been fully overhauled by our clockmaker. Pendulum is original. It runs for 8 days and strikes the hours and halves on a bell. We have a video of the clock, please ask and we will send you a link.
Condition of the case is excellent, the original gilding is particularly good with only minor wear where the clock has been handled and some light marks and discolouration. The rear most bun feet are missing however the clock sits very well without them. Rear frosted glass has some marks. Enamel is very good.
Established by Basile Charles Le Roy in 1785, the firm of Le Roy et Fils became a well-established and renowned clockmaker. Basile had been Napoleon's master clockmaker, and along with his son Charles-Louis, he worked for Princess Pauline and the Duke de Bourbon as well. Examples of the firm's work are included in all of the major world collections. The firm was located at the Palais Royale from 1785, the year of its founding, through the death of Charles-Louis at Versailles in 1865. A shop was opened in London, in 1854 at 296 Regent Street under the name of Le Roy and Son. The name was later changed to Le Roy and Fils...
